My mask drove me crazy last night for first time...

Post by NMchop » Tue Mar 31, 2015 12:12 pm

I've been using the Fisher and Paykel Full Face mask and two nights ago (and most nights), it's pretty good, even though Sleepyhead says I'm having too many leaks.

Last night, it was I'm hoping an exception. I felt like last night was an exception, the mask was a leaking, ill fitting device.
With each adjustment of tightening a strap here, a strap there, it'd continue to find a spot to shoot air out. The usually comfort of it
was aggravating. I felt like I had over tightened everything, and it still was going crazy.

No matter what I did, it'd leak out of every conceivable spot...i'd move my head one way, you'd hear the air leaking out at the right cheek, the left cheek, move a little and it'd really start the farting noises. Strap it tighter, roll over, it would start a symphony of leak noises.

Every time I woke up, more of the same.

And both of my eyes are watering like crazy as I wake up today.

I've been practicing to "not mouth breath" in hopes of using a nasal mask at some juncture.. I've been using some of the techniques discussed on here. And that seemed to contribute, at least while I was awake and conscious of it. I've been leaving mouth closed and putting my tongue at the back of my teeth and at the roof of my mouth best I can. I'm at pressure 14 and with my mouth shut, it seemed like that made the area under the mask more conducive to coming off my face at the various seal points...it was creating "lift off", if you follow me.

That wasn't the entire problem. But every time I'd wake up, I'd hear that hissing noise. or worst. I just felt like most nights the mask has fit fine but for whatever reason, last night the mask was a fail. I hope this isn't the start of a trend. Tonight and the next few nights will tell.

The darn thing just didn't "fit" last night and really contributed to aggravation. If every night was like this I'd be really frustrated. I'm hoping it was anomaly.
I felt like I listened to someone inflating their auto tires and then taking the air out of their tires all night.

What is your normal mask cleaning routine and how long have you been using this mask cushion?
While it is unlikely that the cushion has become tired in this short of time ...wouldn't be impossible.

Most likely last night was just an off night but if it happens often then look at your cushion life, cleaning routine for the cushion and also cleaning routine for your face to see if anything may have changed in that regard.

When mine starts doing that I get up and soak the cushion in warm soapy water. I also clean my face with witch hazel, put it all back together and walla, no more leaks...just sayin, clean, clean clean.

I've been using the Quattro mask for 5 years. Every once in a while I will have one of those nights.....I will get up, wipe my cushion with a baby wipe, wash and dry my face and start my bedtime routine over again. It usually works. I think that getting up and moving around tightens the facial muscles that had previously relaxed while I was sleeping.

Thanks for the responses.

The eye thing has bothered me all day, I feel like my right eye is "fluttering". or that there is something I need to do to it, like move
a little thing in my eye that is way down low (under the skin, beneath the eye ball). I think that is related to last night too.

I use a plastic mixing bowl I bought and add a tiny bit of dawn, add some warm water and swoosh the mask around in the warm sudsy water (not that many suds). Then I have a dryer on the washer that I just leave there and set the mask down there to dry.

I do the hose once a week, the mask probably 5 days out of 7 (mean to do it every day but a day a week or so I get too busy and blow it off).

that's my "cleaning" the mask routine.

Next time the symphony starts, I'll try your ideas. I had the straps way too tight last night...I'm in week 5 now of therapy.

which baby wipes do you buy?

It might be a way conveniently wash the mask on the 2 days that I'm not getting it done my way.

What's bad for the mask? I wouldn't buy the lemony wipes or whatever. I think I have some wet ones in travel packs.
Wonder if they are too harsh for a mask...Probably don't want too many chemicals which is why the baby ones are probably
your choice...gentle ingredients.

Sounds to me like your mask might even be a size too large - any chance of that?

I use Pampers Baby Wipes for sensitive skin. Make sure the wipes have no aloe or alcohol. The wipes indicate it has "aloe juice", I've not had any trouble with them since I started using them 5 years ago. I personally think you are washing the mask too frequently. I would wipe down the mask with a baby wipe every morning, then wash and soak the mask on weekends. I use baby shampoo, but a lot of folks use the dawn and other "gentle" soaps. I've started using the Resmed F10 on a permanent basis, and for me, it appears that washing the cushion, tends to reduce the cushion life.

I think there is a chance of that.

The mask came with a sizing tool (piece of cardboard you hold up to your face....it said I'm a medium and I have a medium.

Last night was back to normal (except the fluttering right eye problem is back). But I didn't have any of the issues last night I had the night
before. Maybe it was just my night for weird mask things to happen. If that's the worst thing that happens to me I guess I'll be good!

Thanks for the tip on Pampers baby wipes and no aloe or alcohol. I'll check the wipes I have for those ingredients (Purell and wet ones). I'm sure they have alcohol but I'll double check and look for those baby wipes next time I shop. It's such a good idea.

I just use a squirt of purell (it's gelled alcohol) and a tissue to wipe off my mask, on the theory that it cuts any oils easily.

I've heard people say alcohol is bad for silicone, but I can't find references substantiating that, just hearsay. I've looked, and I'd be interested in any actual scientificish "detrimental effects of alcohol on silicone" references.

Thanks--I honestly have no idea what I'm doing on the "wipe" front. Or what harms silicone.

I currently have unopened bag of Purell wipes...if those are harmless, then I'm golden!

I don't the "sudsy Dawn soap on the mask" routine, but wipes would really be less of a hassle.

I'm not saying they're harmless... all I'm saying is that I've not been able to find anything that says one way or the other, (except for "so and so said that someone told them"... )

but I *did* use them every night on my mirage quattro mask cushion, along with washing it most every weekend in dawn soap... and it lasted five *years*... in fact, it's still good, but I decided to give the P10 a try after it came out.

Last night I had leaks so bad that the machine stopped measuring my flow at 2 junctures!

MY AHI was .46. A new world record. Not sure how accurate that is since the mask was hard to get a seal on again, kind of like
my original post.

But when I rolled on my side and nodded off, I had ended the air leak symphony, which apparently continued as I slept.

Is it harmful to the silicon to wash a mask in plain water? I'm using a FFM and sometimes drool, so it seems kind of gross not to wash it every day. I run it under warm water every morning , making sure to rinse between the two layers of silicon. It is dry by evening. I wash it in a basin with dish soap on the weekend, along with the headgear.
