Not happy with Respironics headgear

Post by Spiralmind » Tue Mar 31, 2015 4:09 am

Can anyone recommend a better manufacturer of headgear/masks than Respironics? Their products don't last longer than 4 or 5 months, and since insurance won't pay for replacements earlier than 6 months, leaves me without the use of my machine for 2 months. This is unacceptable. Respironc's supplies are total crap.

I have the Respironics Wisp fabric. After 2 months the plastic has snapped and has torn the fabric almost clean through.

I use the same mask. I expect that the plastic snap point is the failed part. That worried me at first but someone suggested that I never undo the snap. Instead, I put mine on and off as I would a "football helmet". It seems to be working fine although I have used mine about 10 weeks. My DME called to get my "re-supply" order last night and told me Medicare will replace the "frame" which is the piece that holds the mask at 3 months but not the "headgear" which is the straps that go over and behind my head; they are replaced at 6 months.
While the little white plastic "button" probably comes with the headgear hence not replaced at 3 months, it looks like you can undo the velco strap and put it through the opening in the frame and still use the whole device. That might give you some respite until it is replaced.
Fundamental question is: do you like the mask when it is working and does it do the job for you? If so, then maybe you will find adaptation is a good alternative.
Good luck.

PR FitLife. Straps lose elasticity. Velcro loses ability to adhere. Not my choice of design either. I agree, poor head gear. Or better put. What _____ allows a government clerk to decide that any headgear lasts for six months? Since most insurance follows Medicare, we are left with this problem.

Look at the Swift FX Nano cushion mask. It's very similar in design as far as the cushion goes of the Wisp but the headgear is mostly silicone and will last forever with proper care.

The headgear on my Wisp falls off because the velcro won't stick.

Do you leave the Velcro apart/unfastened when you wash it? If you do, the Velcro will fill up with fibers and result in what you describe.

It sounds like the front frame on your wisp is bad, not the headgear.
Which part is breaking? This part?

Or this part?

Note: prices are actually lower than listed, and may vary day to day.

Hand washing is so easy. Treat like dainties, submerge, squish, rinse.
Much elasticity returns when you get the dirt out.
To dry quickly, roll in a clean towel and step on it. Spread it out to finish drying.
Just do it. Please. Folks have gotten scalp infections from dirty headgear.

That's how I washed the Quattro air headgear my mom gave me. Yes, I need to wash my Wisp now...I clean everything else daily.
