Resmed Air Series Kudos

Post by hyperlexis » Sat Mar 28, 2015 2:53 pm

I have to give credit where due and the new Air Series seems like a real winner. After months and months (years?) of cajoling, I convinced a good friend to finally get a machine for his severe apnea. He demanded a bipap (he still thinks they are better because of lower exhalation pressure -- he still doesn't understand EPR on modern xPAP units...) and he ended up with the AirCurve 10 vAuto.

The DME delivered it to him at our office yesterday and OMG it is small but above all it is virtually silent. I cant believe how quiet this thing is! I heard nothing but the air from the mask vent. (Q-FX). My PR560 sounds like a jet engine compared to this thing.

Alas, the DME tech set the machine to straight bipap mode (s) and so we 'had to' later adjust it to vPap auto mode to allow auto titrating... He said the machine did jack up the pressure last night and woke him up, so he must have been having some apneas. (AHI 2.4) So at least the unit did its job. He and his MD will have to see how the numbers go over time to see if this was the right call.

On the up side, the AirCurve allows viewing the actual IPAP and EPAP pressures in real time, on the color display, plus in Clinical mode, multiple other parameters like RR. The display can be woken up just by turning the control knob, unlike the PR machines. Also the humidifier chamber is easy to view and drain. Plus the cellular connection is amazing -- you can log on to ResMed's MyAir website and see the daily data. Very high tech setup. The padded travel bag is also awesome with printed indicators showing just where each component should go, and extra storage on the outside. My PR travel bag is a dark, mystery chamber. The breathing pattern on the machine seems ok. I tried using it myself and couldn't detect much of a difference from the feel of cflex/aflex.

Downsides are there is still no clock and calendar on the display! Plus the hose outlet is still on the back and is fixed, for the standard tube. ...Dumb design. Plus, the auto start and stop will not work at all, by design, if leak alert is activated. And the non-adjustable leak alert sound is so faint as to be almost useless anyway. Dumb.

Overall, however, it's an improvement over other machines. PR and Fisher Paykel and definitely DeVilbiss need to release some newer and better models, soon, to stay competitive. If they could release something as small and as good as this Air series, plus address the nagging, remaining other problems, like lack of a clock, etc., they would be golden. Add an iPhone/USB jack and speakers/radio and wow, that would be a definite winner on the bedside table!

Kudos to ResMed on this one.

there's actually very little change between the s9 vpaps and the ac10 vpaps.

including the realtime display of treatment readings, smartstart vs leak alarm, travel bag, pretty much the same.

no built in cell connection/myair thingy.

There is a clock, but it can only be seen (and set) in clinicians mode.

Thanks for the update. Just realize that there is this new MyAir from your post. Register and want to see the result from MyAir vs SleepyHead. Good thing is that no more SD card in and out and frequently forgetting to put it back.

myair is more like a little video game than a data presentation engine.

it's rudimentary at best.

My first night on my AirSense 10, I had a horrible night, and I got a "MyAir" score of 65. Underneath it, it said "That's a great score!" Really?

I'm now hitting 95's and it's telling me that's an excellent score, so at least there's some variation. My machine is set to auto between 4 - 8 cm H20 - I'd love to know at what pressure I'm getting the most help, but MyAir doesn't give you that data. I think I'm suffering from SleepyHead envy.

The data is helpful in this one way: being new to the whole CPAP experience, in my first several weeks I projected all of my anxiety onto air leaks. I've seen now from the MyAir data that the mask fit is quite fine, and it really helps me relax.

If you have Essentials in clinical menu set to "Plus" I believe you can see everything right on the Airsense screen that you would see on MyAir, so I don't really see the point of MyAir. And if your want detailed data use SleepyHead.
