6 year CPAP user. Should I try Auto?

I just received a call back from my doctor and he is not familiar with the Auto titrating machines so I will be keeping my original 12 setting which is what you suggested Pugsy. That setting is from a sleep study that was done over 6 years ago. I thought that my setting may have needed an adjustment so I was fascinated with the possibility of auto. My last machine did not have the bells and whistles that my new machine will have. I was previously unable to monitor my nightly sleep. What recommendations do you have for someone who is going from an old machine to a new machine with many more capabilities? It looks like I will have the Airsense 10 Auto. I have heard about the SleepyHead software. Will this help me figure out if 12 is still a good setting even if I am not using the auto feature? What other tools that I should be looking into? thanks for all the help.

Yes...start with the 12 cm that you were previously using and by using SleepyHead (or ResScan) it can be determined if things are going well or could stand some improvement and then you can decide how you want to proceed.

From the OPs last post, my guess is the prescription is for straight pressure because the doctor isn't familiar with the potential perks of using the auto feature, and NOT because the straight 12cm is the best pressure setting.
My suggestion is to arm yourself with as much info as you can. Learn to change your therapy to best suit YOU, not the doc or DME's ignorance. SleepyHead is an invaluable tool, as are forums like this one.

If I might interject.........it sounds like your Doctor is not very current on cpap tech, and, that it's possible that he/she should be replaced also ! I am pondering the possibility of going from a cpap to an apap myself but, I'm thinking that the older, S9 Autoset might be a better, less complicated machine for me. I don't think it does wireless communications over the air like the new Airsense 10's do and that it might be easier for me to operate also. Good luck with your new machine !

Thanks everyone. Gasper I also thought it was odd that my Dr was not familiar with auto. I wonder if there are better Dr options for me in my area. I picked up my new machine today. I went with the Airsense 10 Auto. It is set to 12 cm. I am going to get started with SleepyHead sometime soon but was wondering if it is ok to sign up for the Resmed/MyAir to monitor things until then. Any downside to enabling this? Is it free? I just haven't had time to read over and get started with the SleepyHead software. thanks

No downside (other than the data reported is limited) that I can think of and it's free but the same information that is reported on MyAir is also available on the machine's LCD screen except I think MyAir gives some sort of extra thing like a fluff score rating your sleep which really doesn't really tell a person the truth about sleep quality. It would be really easy to cheat on that score.

It is free though and other than maybe some potential discomfort about having your machine serial number and some personal sleep data out there on the web tied to something...if that doesn't bug you then give it a try. I don't know if they will need your personal email address to sign up for it. I always hate that sort of thing...seems like every time I give my email address out that I get deluged with spam even though privacy agreements say they don't share it...I think they do.

The report/dashboard is very cartoonish and only tells you events, how many times you had your mask off, mask seal and usage hours. No graphs or anything.

I had to give out the serial, etc. and an email address (I have a few junk email addresses just in case). Good thing, because they are now sending me emails like, "GOOD JOB! You get a silver star for using your machine four days in a row!"
