New with lots of ??'s

Post by SueB » Thu Mar 26, 2015 4:37 pm

Hi everyone,
My first post..... I'm a 54 yr old female, been diagnosed with moderate OSA with two sleep studies, but am just finally coming to terms with needing to do something about it; can't stand the fatigue, headaches and gasping for breath anymore. Tomorrow is the appt. with the ENT doc where I'll let him know I'm ready for a machine. What kind of questions should I be asking? Am I probably going to need to spend another night at the dreaded clinic to get fitted for a machine or do they already have the info from the latest study six months ago? Are they going to steer me toward a certain supplier or is that all completely up to me, and if so, how do I possibly choose with all the options out there?
Thanks so much in advance,
SueB

Check with your insurance company and find out what DMEs (Durable Medical Equipment Suppliers) are in network. You can take your doctor's prescription to anyone you want. Get copies of your sleep study and doctors prescription.

Hi - this may turn out not to be needed, but... ENT's are notorious for telling patients they'd be better off with surgery. And that has definitely not been the case for the majority of OSA patients who've had it, found it didn't do the job and did create new problems, so just a little heads up in case your ENT is like all other surgeons... looking for that nail to be a hammer for.

Thank you, these replies have all been really helpful. I'll post more tomorrow after I find out more from the doc.

Did you have a "titration study" six months ago? That is where they put you on a pap machine and you (try to) sleep while they (try to ) figure out your pressure needs.

If not, they might ask you to do that.

But some insurance companies are just sending people home with APAP machines.
