Formatting New SD card?

Post by Suenyo » Wed Mar 04, 2015 1:41 pm

Did I just make a big mistake? The last week or so my old SD card has been reporting problems when inserted in my new Mac mini, but when I checked it on the Windows 8.1 machine where it has been used since I started APap therapy in August, the PC said it was ok.

Well, it wasn't cause it refused to read today on either machine. The windows machine flagged it as "Bad" and refused to mount it. The Mac mounted it as "No Name" but Sleepyhead could not download any new or old data.

So, I pop a new 32GB card into the Respironics. Should I have formatted it first or is it better to let Phillips do the job?

Thanks,

I would just let Phillips machine do whatever it wants to do.
I have never had the need to do a formal reformat with either my Respironics or my ResMed machines when I have used a new card or a card that I erased prior data from.

Most new SDHC cards come with FAT32 format. It should work in your machine just fine. That is a huge capacity card for CPAP purposes. If you can find one that is smaller, you can use that in your camera or other device that might actually use that kind of memory.

Thanks Pugsy,

I just got worried because it took so long for the Respironics to set it up. It seems to be ok now, but has no data. I guess Respironics doesn't update the card with any data it may have in internal memory? I'm still trying to understand what is going on with the cards. I got a 2mb card with the machine, but I didn't want to mess it up so I put in a 32mb card I had lying around and I just take the daily Sleepyhead readings from that card since it has the data for the flow chart etc. and the original does not. But I would insert the original card about once a week and the machine seemed to update that weeks files onto it. At least the people at the respiratory pharmacy never complained about missing data, but

Lately I started using it in my Macintosh computer and was getting error messages. Oddly, I checked it in my Windows machine and it reported no errors, but the card failed this morning. Disappointing because I changed to CPAP at 12cm last night and I was anxious to see the charts. I'm really having a hard time with this, and I looked back at daily charts last night in some detail and noticed that the Respironics makes exploratory increases in pressure only when there are no events happening, increases pressure during Flow Limitations and Obstructive Apneas, and appears to reduce pressure back to the low setting if Centrals become common, but my point is that no matter what it is doing my AHI doesn't seem to be much affected. On those very few nights I have had an AHI of 5 or less, the events were not present from the time I went to bed and the machine did nothing except supply air at the lowest setting (which varied according to my experimentation). So I figure why not just try a CPAP setting of 12 and see if the lack of event manipulation by the machine has a positive or negative effect (or none at all).

Truth is, I feel like shooting myself. I'm so tired of this. I won't though, cause I read that new article about the new Inspire (tm) surgery, and i'm going to talk to my doc about it.

Rider,

Thanks. I just checked my camera and i have a 1GB in there. Think I will swap them! (I can't believe I was prescient enough to order the new card and I got it this morning in the mail!)

Actually your machine does store quite a bit of data on its internal memory and will put it on that new SD card...so it's on there but due to the 32 GB size the data portion will be so small that it will still show up as probably 100% still available.
The PR S1 machines store quite a bit of data on the internal memory with some limitations but the bulk of the good stuff will be available.
The limitations being wave form/flow rate and some minor detailed data that gets overwritten at the 30 day mark.

Pugsy,

Oh wow! You understand the file system of those machines! That's amazing, how did you figure it out?

32 GB cards are SDXC standard. It will probably work, but an SDHC or SD card would be a little more likely to work.

Cards of 1 or 2 GB are SD and are the "standard" for PRS1 and S9 machines. The machine may work with a larger card, but it won't use the extra space.

4 through 16 GB are probably SDHC, which many people use with no problems. It's getting to be hard to find 2 GB cards, so these are easier to find and may be cheaper. Some people report that cards larger than 2 GB won't work on their machines, but many others have success. Maybe it depends on the version of the machine.

32 GB and above are SDXC, which appears to work, but we don't have a lot of experience with. I would expect the Respironics to format it correctly, but if need be, format it to FAT32 in your PC.

In my experience over 10 years, SD cards just tend to fail for no obvious reason from time to time. They're cheap enough to just replace when they get squirrelly most of the time.
