Couple of querys

Post by crazygravy » Wed Mar 04, 2015 2:36 pm

Our company changed insurance in December and after a wonderful $105 copay bill for just 1 months supplies arrived in my mail I discovered they are no longer covered. With the $1500 deductible I'd be out $1200 for a years supplies. Something I cannot afford. Now my 2 questions:

1) Are there any companies that offer help for an individual who can't afford their supplies any longer.

2) Currently I get 2 sets of pillows and 2 cushions each month. Can one get away with stretching those to 2 months or even 3 before replacing them?

I'm have 6 months on my P10 pillows with no leaks. They don't necessarily need to be replaced as often as insurance said they could be replaced. There are also online options where you can get supplies for less than your DME will charge. Cpap.com, Amazon, EBay, and this forum has a pillow exchange thread.
Make sure you have a copy of your prescription and you can buy your own supplies.

Nasal pillow life and/or cushion life varies widely from user to user but I have found that I have always been able to get months and months of life out of 1 set of nasal pillows (only mask I have ever used).
Last October I retired my first set of nasal pillows used with my P10 nasal pillow mask...that was 10 months of nightly use on one set of nasal pillows...and come to find out they probably would have lasted longer as I figured out that my main problem was the headgear being too stretched out.

Also...you might check out EBay for deals on the nasal pillows or cushions...since you will essentially be paying out of pocket anyway (assuming you don't meet your deductible with something else) you may find substantial savings.
I have found some killer hot deals on EBay...like just last night I found a P10 with 3 sizes of pillows and the stretchy headgear plus a "bonus" for $40 and I have bought from that seller before...and the bonus is the frame/short hose...so essentially a full complete P10 for $40 and with free shipping to boot and totally sealed in original ResMed packaging.
So there are ways to keep replacement costs to a minimum.

To control expenses, the first thing you need to do is ditch the local DME.
If you like them, you can show them the prices at cpap.com, and challenge them to price match.
If they refuse, you already know where you can go.
For cushions or pillows, Ebay and Amazon may have surprises, as well.
If you need a gently used or open box backup machine, secondwindcpap can help.
Sometimes members have older used stuff for cheap.

I just signed up for auto deliveries of filters and nasal pillows - not sure how often they'll be sending. I only pay $3 per pillow with my insurance so I figure I'll get a good stockpile and then quit. My one-year CPAP anniversary is coming up and I think I'm on pillow #4. I go through the filters a lot faster though.
