Nasal Whistle on exhale

Post by mgo266 » Sun Mar 01, 2015 8:33 pm

Just joined the site about an hour ago. i've been using the AirFit P10 nasal pillow for about a week and during the night my wife says that she hears a whistling sound coming from the nasal pillows. it doesnt happen when i first put them on, but sometime during the night it happens and is waking my wife up. I am using the large size pillows. Has anyone run into this situation or heard of it? any suggestions on correcting it or what mght be causing it? thank you.

One possibility is that the mask has adjusted slightly on your face and what is causing the whistle is a small leak. Have your wife reach over and wiggle the mask a little to see if it goes away. Of course she won't do that all the time but she may for the purpose of discovery.

If the mask is shifting slightly you may have to do some slight adjustments. I always caution about getting a mask too tight but too loose is also a problem.

I use P10 as well. The nasal pillows do whistle sometimes. I do the following:
1) Jiggle your nose sideways 2-3 times. Then re-evaluate the whistling sound.
2) Lift pillows out of the nose a bit, adjust them a bit outward from the center of the face, reseat.

I get zero leaks all night on P10 if I eliminate the whistle early on.

Also, washing the headgear to tighten it a bit helps.

I also have the p10 and it will wistle at night especially if I roll over to my side. I wiggle it to reseal the pillows, it usually stops whistling. Sometimes I stop machine and re fit my nasel pillow. I also agree taking it apart and cleaning daily is a good move.

thank you for the comments and suggestions. I've only been using the P10 for about a week so far and it happened again last night, but not the night before. i do try to readjust and jiggle the pillows, but then it just doesn't seem to help with the noise. The mask doesn't appear to be leaking around my nose and I'm told (of course i'm asleep when its happening so i don't hear it) that the whistling is occuring when i am breathing in and out. i tried the small and also medium size pillows on the P10; they didn't whistle but the noise of the air going thru them was loud. I asked the CPAP supplier today if they made XL pillows, but was told they don't. Has anyone tried any other masks that may have worked better? or is the P10 the best. really like how light it is. trying to stay with something that just deals with the nose and not going to the full face mask.

Another thing to check. The pillows are made up of an inside and outside sleeve. Sometimes the inside sleeve gets turned around, if that is the case just use your finger inside to turn it around inside the pillow. I have struggled all night with fit before I see that this is what has happened, usually after washing.

the last 2 nights have been bad. I tried jiggling my nose, readjusting it, pulling it away from my nose and reseating it, took it off and put it back on, checked the pillows, just couldn't get comfortable. the technician suggested trying the Mirage FX in the standard size. anyone try this one before?

I've been using the nasal pillows for a short period of time and the whistle is extremely annoying!
Finally I have figured out this is...a "Design Flaw"!!!
The nasal cones are double walled and airflow through the interior wall causes the whistle.
The solution is a big pain, however, it works!
Turn the nasal cones inside out and using a very small sharp pair of scissors, cut and remove the inner layer/wall from the nasal cones.
Once this is done,"design flaw" fixed and the whistle is gone.
Manufactures, PLEASE fix this design flaw, people are trying to get some sleep and this whistle makes it more difficult to sleep than the Sleep Apnea itself!

this is *bad* advice. the airflow isn't between the cones, it's out the large opening in the middle. the reason it has double walled cones is that the inner stiffer ones give structure, and the outer, softer ones are more conformal and seal against your nose better.

if it's whistling, it's because you don't have the mask fitting correctly.

however, if you want to ruin a 20$ pillow, go for it.

Interesting solution. If it gives you longer use, good; but I have my doubts. . .
My P10 pillows have not done this (knock on wood), but it happened fairly frequently
(inversion of the inner cone) with Swift FX, which I no longer use.
It appears to me that Resmed had corrected the problem--mostly,
but I only use my pillows for three weeks now. Maybe it is a timing design, to force turnaround?
