New User -- Sleeping Postion

Post by JoeWingrove » Sat Feb 28, 2015 7:00 pm

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea recently and received my machine on February 16th. Got a PR REMstar Auto A-Flex with a Quattro Air Full Face mask and a PR System One Heater. I have been slowly getting used to it but have had problems when I am laying flat (or semi propped up) in my bed. It feels like there is a lump forming in the back of my throat making it hard to breath and it didn't happen when I first got it but after the first week when I started using it more. However if I sit in a more reclined potion such as propped up on my sofa or other living room chair I don't seem to have that problem. I had a little bit of a cold when this first started so not sure if that was the problem or not. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for fixing the problems I encountered using the machine in my bed.

Back-sleeping is the one position known to provoke more apneas, and we try very hard not to sleep that way, but on our sides or semi-prone, using pillows, etc. if necessary behind us to keep from turning on our backs overnight... so unless you can't sleep any other way, I suggest you try to not do that at all. Recliners help OSA but are not an ideal way to sleep for other reasons and we only recommend it for e.g. nights when machines aren't working and no back-ups are available. Your throat closes with OSA, which is why C (or Apap) uses pressure to keep it open.

That is good information to know, before I got the machine sleeping on my back was a last resort choice and I somehow got it in my head that I would need to sleep on my back in order to keep the mask properly sealed. I was planning on moving my machine back to my bed to attempt it again tonight and will keep that advice in mind and hopefully I can get a full nights rest on the machine.

If the mask and headgear are fitted (loose/tight scenario) there should continue to be a seal... I started with Quattro Air and could not get rid of the noise from face farts; mask liners helped a great deal. I now use the F10, which uses the same cushion as the Air. They are both so comfortable that I never wanted to try different masks in the beginning of my journey. I use a liner every night and rarely experience leaks above the red line in sleepyhead. I'm not aware of any leaks waking me up, but some nights large leaks do occur, according to sleepyhead, but there are no more noisy face farts to keep me awake. Mask liners could be an option if you do experience bothersome leaks.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

Quick update, the change in position back to normal made all the difference and I was able to sleep comfortably last night. Now it seems I just need to be able to get used to sleeping soundly again and waking early in the morning and not being able to go to sleep again because I am wide awake.

Thanks again for the advice.
