Ventilator mask sold as a CPAP mask?

Post by reader2580 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 7:12 pm

I ordered what was supposed to a be a Respironics Fitlife mask. What I got is a Respironics Performax mask. It looked like the right thing when I got it so I opened it up and put it on to test it. I tried to hook up my hose and it wouldn't fit. I looked closer at the packaging after the hose wouldn't hook up and noticed the wrong product name.

Have others had this issue? I don't know if there is any difference between the two masks other than the valve, but what I have does me no good. It looks like like this mask might solve my problems, but no way to test without the right mask. I really need a mask that works for me and I don't want to wait another week. I suppose this is why the vendor was selling the mask for only $80. I guess I should have used cpap.com and paid the extra $40.

It's sold as a cpap mask from what I could tell.
Are you sure that you aren't missing an adapter on the mask or have an old adapter stuck in the hose that prevents the hose from fitting? It should work with standard hoses.

Be careful. There are non-vented masks for use with ventilators. You could die if you used one of these on a CPAP machine without a separate exhalation port.

Some of the performax masks are also classified as "single use."

The mask I got is a Respironics Performax mask. The Respironics online catalog lists it as a hospital mask for ventilator use. CPAP is not mentioned anywhere. The part number on the packing list is for the Fitlife CPAP mask, but it is not the part number I got. I don't know if it is an honest mistake, or if they are selling a ventilator mask as a CPAP mask. There is no adapter for CPAP in the bag.

CPAP.com does sell a replacement valve for the Fitlife, but I don't know if just the valve is different or not. The frame of the mask does say Performax on it, but it looks just like the Fitlife.

I have no intentions of trying to make this mask work. It does have an anti-asphyxia valve, but seems to have no other venting. I have no idea if a Fitlife mask has venting in the mask or not.

I'm trying to. I'm just wondering if it is common for sellers to do this, or if they just made a mistake. The price was really cheap.

I agree with not trying to make it work. However, it appears it may have a "circular" vent right at the mask at the point where the elbow fits into the mask. I'm not 100% sure, though.

I say return it because it's not what you ordered.

The company I bought the mask from will only refund my money. They are willing to pay for return shipping since they screwed up.

I just got a new Fitlife mask today from another vendor. The mask itself looks 100% the same as the Performax mask. The only difference is the valve which fits on the Performax mask. The CPAP valve is almost identical to the ventilator valve. The valve on the Fitlife mask has an adapter to allow the CPAP hose to connect. I'm debating if I should just keep the Performax mask for when the Fitlife mask needs replacement. The Fitlife does not have a replaceable cushion.

Edit - Good point, frog.

You need both the exhaust port and the anti-asphyxia valve to make a hospital full face mask safe to use.

At least you can find out if the AA valve will fit the first mask.
Please tell us.
