Apap mode causing mask trouble

Post by truetopath » Thu Feb 26, 2015 9:43 am

So my prescribed cpap pressure is 11cm from my split night sleep study, but I wanted to set a tight range on auto mode to see how my pressure needs fluctuate. I started with 10-13cm and the highest my pressure went was 12.5 and the lowest was 10.8. my problem was that with the nasal mask, every time the pressure would increase it would break my seal and I'd get woken up to fix the leak. So I tried the full face mask. Same thing happened. So the next night I tried 11cm-13cm. Same leaking happened, and also in Apap mode my AHI climbed to 3.9. When in cpap mode my highest was 2.4 and that was the first night. So my question is, is there a trick to stop the increasing pressure from breaking your seal? And is there a better mask style for Apap mode? Currently using an Ultra mirage 2 nasal mask, and ESon nasal mask, and a mirage Quattro, all of which I get great seals with in cpap mode.

Your pressure range is tight enough that you should stay at CPAP mode if that keeps your mask more secure.

Are you opposed to using cpap mode all the time since you have better success controlling leaks in cpap mode?

I don't know that there is any one mask that might work better in terms of leak control when using apap mode than any other mask.
My pressures range from 6 exhale and 9 inhale to 18 exhale and 22 inhale and I don't have trouble with mask sealing.
I would think that simple physics would be a factor though...the greater the surface area touching the skin then the greater the potential problem for seal being broken at really any pressure.

Your pressure ranges are small...assuming that you fit the mask initially at the higher limits of your pressure I don't know what else to offer except maybe try a mask liner and see if that helps if you want to continue using varying pressures.

I think I'll probably just stick with cpap mode then. Just curious if anyone had similar problems. Thanks for chiming in.
