Congestion

Post by Greg Riddle » Tue Feb 03, 2015 8:58 pm

Decided to mess with humidifier settings to see how it effects congestion. Started with everything off. Within 2 minutes of lying down my nose was severely congested. I sat up to turn humidifier settings all the way up. By the time I was done changing settings the congestion was gone. Back down and congestion was severe within 2 minutes. Got up congestion is gone. Whatever is going on I don't think the humidifier is going to change anything. Back to ENT at end of the month

thanks for sharing. I now some people recommend quite the opposite: turning humidity down. You and Pugsy, if I am not mistaken, require it to be highest. Could it be because of surgery you once had?

Microgravity causes bodily fluids to shift and many astronauts undergo head congestion, at least the first few days of flight. Just like having a cold, this congestion causes food to taste a bit off.
gravity affects fluid location...

Have you tried the elevation of the head of the bed that has been mentioned here before? Maybe it would help, in addition to a wedge or something...do you get congested sleeping in a recliner?

Tan, the up and down he is referring to, I believe is sitting up or laying down. Upright sinuses are okay, laying down = congestion. Not humidity level. I think...?

It's it is Position I'm talking about. I haven't tried a wedge. But I'm building a bed for wife and I and considering building it so I can sleep more upright

You have to also take into account ambient, or local humidity. If you're in Seattle, adding humidity would probably be unnecessary most of the time, and only if you personally are aware of needing more (high central heating?) would you want to use it, and the reverse would likely be true if you're in Arizona and not near a lake or other body of water that generally humidifies the local climate.

grabbity... it sucks.

or, otherwise stated, 'grabbity, it's not a good idea, it's just the law'.

Saw ent today. He said my larynx was inflamed and I may have gerd. If I do it can't be bad. He said the he could have reduced my turbinates more when I had surgery but he wants to be conservative. He also said that maybe a 50% turbinate removal might be best but worries about empty nose syndrome as a risk

Work on the GERD for now as they're the most likely culprits - 'silent' GERD can make people nuts as they don't want to believe they have it, but it can be just as much trouble as more obvious heartburn etc.
