I don't think that Respironics really gave us (patients/cpap users) a second thought when they decided umpteen years ago to go with the internal clock that couldn't be changed except at the factory. We aren't the customers...the DMEs are and the DMEs could care less about an accurate clock. All they care about is hours of use and one doesn't have to have an accurate starting and stopping time to get hours of use to satisfy any insurance compliance issues so that they get paid.
Remember...we aren't even supposed to know about or use software that shows the time...so who cares if the patient has a report where the times are off...we aren't even supposed to know any of that stuff exists.

There's also a non-replaceable clock battery in the PRS1 and ResMed machines.

Sounds to me like a deliberate self-destruct mechanism to force you to buy a new machine every 10 years or so when the battery finally dies.

I don't know why you say this, since the battery in the resmed's is clearly clipped into a holder... do you allege that there's a self destruct switch under the battery in its holder?

The S9 battery is not replaceable by the customer. If the battery dies, the machine loses track of time when the power is romoved. Does it also lose your pressure settings if the power goes off? Does it have flash memory for the machine settings, or does it depend on the battery to keep memory alive?

Since the user can reset the S9 clock, an S9 could be usable after the battery dies, with the inconvenience of having to reset the clock if the power goes off. If only the clock is affected, I guess non-data users wouldn't care.

The PRS1 machine I disassembled looks like the battery is replaceable if you open the case, but it's actually spot welded to the holder, and can only be removed by desoldering. I haven't opened up an S9. Have you tried to see if the battery is actually removable on the S9?

To me, it's clear the manufacturers are expecting to sell you a new machine once the battery dies on the old one.

Is it clear the battery can be removed? On the PRS1 machine I opened up, it's in what looks like a battery holder, but it's actually spot welded to the battery "holder" terminals. I thought it would be removable from looking at it, but when I tried to remove it, it wouldn't move.

You may be right. The S9 battery does look like you could take it out from your pictures, but the PRS1 battery looked removable, too.

why don't you just pop the top off yours and take the battery out to verify?
