No insurance or prescription, buying RESMED 9 on craigslist
No insurance or prescription, buying RESMED 9 on craigslist
Hi, my husband definitely has sleep apnea. He is not breathing as much as he is breathing at night. I hear it! We lost our insurance about 2 years ago and his apnea has gotten worse (as he has gained about 20lb) within the last year. He drives a lot for his work (and falling asleep too quickly and easy0 and I am afraid to keep on putting off the test until we can afford the sleep study or get insurance (hopefully within the next year). Any way, I found two cpap machines on craigslist. One is a RESMED Autoset with 2300 run hours for $450. Is this a good price? They are including the cord, carrying case, tube and mask. What else do I need to ask? The other one is RESMED 9 also, isn't sure if it is autoset or not. What could I have him check for to know for sure?
Also, once I get it, what does my hubby need to do? I am assuming it with autoset, but are there settings we need to use? Will I be able to see his report for breathing through the night?
Thank you all so much!!
Jennifer

Jennifer, the first machine is slightly overpriced, but a good machine. I recommend you only consider auto machines since you will attempt to self-titrate pressure. I would offer $375 for that piece of equipment and negotiate from there. Used masks don't have any real value. Do check to be sure the previous owner is a non-smoking household as it can be difficult to remove odors from equipment.
There is equipment available from members on the forum. Click this link viewtopic/t102479/4-Sale-S9-VPAP-Auto-8 ... Avail.html Excellent machine from reliable people.
Even though you don't have insurance, try to work with your primary doctor if you have a good relationship, there is no reason he can't issue a prescription for equipment like masks, filters, tubes etc. This does not require a sleep study and any prescription will work. CPAP.com has standard prescription forms, and will call your doctor for prescriptions, assuming you do the background work and ask his office to help you deal with your lack of insurance and financial difficulty.

It's not a great price...it's a bit high I think...depending on where you live I suppose. But then tightwad is my middle name.
I paid $250 for a similar hour machine probably 2 years ago...450 is in the range of new and not used price.
Self diagnosing and self treating isn't impossible but it takes a lot of education and work.
I will be the first to tell you that self diagnosing may not be ideal because there's other things that can be going on that can only be caught with a sleep study done in a lab setting. I will also mention that home sleep studies are available that don't cost nearly as much as an in lab sleep study. They do well for screening plain jane vanilla OSA..not so great for other problems but since most people have plain vanilla OSA. Good base starting point.
So now that I have given you those thoughts...yes, people can self diagnose and self treat as long as there are no complicating factors. It takes education and work though. We have a lot of people on this forum who have done just that...so it can be done.
Please take the time to register here at the forum and then send me a private message.
I know where you can get a brand new zero hour PR System One APAP 560 machine for $400 and it's from someone I trust.
Oops...I see Sleeprider has already pointed you to the link for the machine I was thinking of...I just hadn't found the link yet.
It's comparable to the S9 AutoSet and a full data machine and software to monitor your results is easy to get and use. I imagine we can also find some sort of new or almost new mask for you to try.

Only make an offer for the first machine if it is an S9 Autoset...You do not want an S8. I think a fair price would be $325 or less.

It comes with a h5i humidifier also, not sure if they all do or not. Would $350 still be a fair price? I asked and there are no animals or smoking in the household.

Jennifer, if you do decide that an S8 II Autoset would fit your needs then I have a used one i am willing to donate. Let me know if you are interested.LSAT wrote:You do not want an S8.

$300 would be a more fair price. but $350 for a S9 Autoset including humidifier isn't all that out of line.
If the "tube" is a Climateline heated hose and not a generic hose then that increases the value assuming it still works as designed.
The mask is probably used and used masks that have been opened have very little value in general. The silicone degrades once the seal is broken even if never used. Depending on the mask model it could seriously affect its function. The more silicone involved the greater the chance for it being affected.

Re: No insurance or prescription, buying RESMED 9 on craigslist
There's a lot of info on which machine to use in the useful links in my signature line below. Some machines have very big advantages (especially data collection) over other machines.
The S9 has a big advantage over the S8 if you're managing your own therapy, because it's much easier to read the data. However, other than reading the data, the S8 Autoset is a very good machine, and free is a great price.
Don't assume that an "auto" machine is just a "turn it on and forget it" proposition. Doing CPAP on your own isn't rocket science, but it's not a Joe Sixpack thing, either.
Doing CPAP on your own risks not treating your apnea correctly. You also run the risk of assuming something is caused by CPAP or apnea, when it's actually some unrelated serious medical condition.

Could you help me get started? Can I still read the data? If not, what difference would that make? What would I need to order to go with it for him to be able to start using it? If this would get him started until he can get his sleep study, I would LOVE to have it!! It worries me to death listening to him sleep. I can send you paypal for shipping. The S8 has some limitations.jcfam wrote: Could you help me get started? Can I still read the data? If not, what difference would that make? What would I need to order to go with it for him to be able to start using it
It doesn't flag centrals at all (the S9s do) which could be important in a self diagnosing situation.
To use it with ResScan software (won't work with SleepyHead) you will need the special Smartcard and a Smart Card reader....not sure if Uncle Bob has the card reader but I would assume he still has the smart card. The card reader is hard to come by and a bit pricey if found.
That said, there is still some data available on the machine's LCD display that would at least get you in the ball pack.
It shows AHI and a 95% leak rate (where the leak was at or below for 95% if the time in L per second).
There's a good chance that the LCD data would be sufficient. Maybe not ideal but if AHI is low and leak is low and a person feels marked improvement...may not need anything else.
Since Uncle Bob is offering to donate...worth at least trying and seeing what happens and if there is a problem then consider one of the newer machines that offers more comprehensive data. Back before these newer models people used to self diagnose and self treat on machines just like the S8 or even older.
Not impossible to do but the newer model make things a bit easier.
I might have a source for the Smart card reader but to be honest with the S8...I would wait to see what shows up on the LCD screen before investing dollars in the reader. There's always a chance that if plain OSA is involved things could be sorted out fairly easily. It wouldn't be ideal but unless complicating factors were present it might work well and at least get him something to start with.
Hoses don't need a RX...EBay is a great source...though knowing Uncle Bob, if he has a hose it would probably be just fine to use one of his used hoses....
Masks...Require a RX for most online retailers but again EBay is a great source if you know the mask parts because mask replacement parts don't require a RX...so buy the parts and build your own mask. Just have to know which parts to buy for which mask. We can help with that...I have done it often on EBay.
I have some brand new filters for the S8 you can have if you want them..free.. I might have a complete mask setup you can have depending on what you want..selection is limited.

I haven't forgotten and yours are probably better than what I might have right now...all my really good choices are long gone.sleep_quest wrote: Don't forget I have some masks as well...
But I do still have some Swift FX nasal pillows and with a couple of purchases on EBay could build a fairly cheap Swift FX...and I have a few not horrible but complete nasal cushion masks that might actually work for someone.
I just don't have any good ones left...like the newer models..Wisp, Nuance, etc.

Re: No insurance or prescription, buying RESMED 9 on craigslist
You'll be able to read his nightly average data from the display on the S8 AutoSet. An S9 will give you much more detailed info and graphs through the software, but the S8 will give you a useful overnight reading. If everything is working well, the AHI number will tell you that. If you're having problems or the AHI number is bad, the S9 would give you a lot more clues as to how to tune it in.jcfam wrote:Uncle_Bob wrote:Could you help me get started? There are a number of other advantages to the S9 AutoSet. However, the S8 AutoSet is still a good machine, especially for free.
You can get the manual for the "secret" setup menu that lets you set up the machine and read data from apneaboard.com.
There are quite a few people here who can help you with setup for the machine.

Re: No insurance or prescription, buying RESMED 9 on craigslist
My S9 auto has 8500 hours and is fine. It claims about 3000 hours in the last year. I've used 3 climate line hoses so that isn't helping the deal.
