New machine, drop in AHI

Post by AEC » Wed Jan 28, 2015 1:19 pm

Hey all. I'd like to get some opinions from the experts here on the forum.

I've used a Respironics System One CPAP machine for just over 4 years. I've been sleeping well and my AHI has always run from about 3.5 to 4.5. This past weekend I started using a new machine, the Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset. Everything is going great, but now my AHI runs from around 0.5 to 1.5. My question is: Is the drop in AHI a reflection of better treatment, or is it just related to differences in measurement by the two different machines? Has anyone else switched machines and noticed a difference like this?

I feel like I am sleeping better, but I'm not sure if it's psychosomatic or not.

Any thoughts?

it could be a little of both.

sometimes your breathing just ... likes the way one or the other handles things.

also, if you didn't have an auto before, then you might not have been getting optimum pressures.

Do you know what was the pressure on your old machine, and what is the pressure range on your new machine?

Both machines are auto. The preset range is the same (4-20) and my average nightly pressure is also about the same ( around 7).

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I'm going to say that your sleeping self just likes the new machine and mask better.

I had similar results moving from a M-Series Auto to the 60 Series Auto. The new machine differentiates OA and CA and also records RERA, unlike the M-Series. I did a bit of tweaking with settings and updated my mask to the Airfit P10, so I figured it was a combination of paying more attention, and better, updated equipment. I have no idea if Resmed scores apnea events a bit differently, but it seems there are a whole lot more Resmed users seeing smilie faces in Sleepyhead than Respironics users.

ResMed does score hyponeas a little differently(only 10 percent different) but the definitions of the others are pretty much the same. So I don't think that accounts for the different results between the brands.
I have used several Respironics machines and 2 ResMed machines and my AHI has always been a bit less with the ResMed machines (even same category machine).
Is it related to better therapy (or better sleep quality) or simply machine sensitivity? I don't know but it isn't unusual to see that much of a reduction. I know there was a substantial reduction just from going from the ResMed S8 to the S9 models.
I don't know that we will ever have a clear cut answer as to why one brand seems to score things more aggressively than another brand but it does seem to happen fairly often.
It's one of those things that I just have to accept without any clear cut explanation as to why.

I know you aren't alone though but I can't explain why with any degree of certainty as to why.
