Can you explain all this to me?

Post by Footballgirl2013 » Tue Jan 27, 2015 11:53 am

So Like I said in the other post, I consider myself "new" to CPAP even though I was diagnosed in 2011 and I started using CPAP regularly in summer of 2013 due to my stupid insurance not giving me the right size mask for my sleep study in 2011.

So I got the results from the 1st half of my sleep study that I redid in fall 2014 and I want some clarity as to what these all mean. It says that I have "Moderate" sleep apnea.

So here goes the data and numbers.
The night I was there I slept for all of only 101 minutes. Wasn't my bed or bedroom.
Overall AHI was 18.4 (Is this based on 1-100? If yes, isn't 18 considered "low" if it based on 1-100)?
While on back AHI was 10.9 per hour, based on 5.5 minutes of sleep in supine position.
During REM Sleep AHI was 10.9 per hour, based on 27.5 mins of REM sleep. (Is this a low number or is it high?)
RDI was 29.7 per hour (Is this high?)
Oxygen saturation dropped from baseline of 98% to a low of 84%
Oxygen saturation dropped below 90% during 0.4% of sleep time (Does zero point 4 percent really mean 40 percent of the time or does it mean 4 percent of the time?)
Snoring: Mild

AHI is the number of apnea events per hour. For you, sleeping 101 minutes (1.63 hours) means during the time you slept, you had 31 total apneas. 31/1.63= 18.4 AHI

Your AHI of 18.4 is classified as moderate. As a general guideline apnea severity is classified as :
Mild 5 to 15
Moderate 15 to 30
Severe 30 or more

There are other considerations like duration of apnea and type or cause.
Oxygen desaturation below 88-90 is considered a significant problem requiring mitigation.
Since you slept only 101 minutes, your time in desaturation was 0.4*101= 4 minutes.

Can you hold your breath that long?

well, to be fair, it wasn't four minutes all in one go.

Can you explain all this to me?
It's easy to explain. You have sleep-disordered breathing which is a very unhealthy condition that leads to many other very unhealthy conditions. Quit worrying about the study and start working on how to get good treatment with a CPAP.

And, which machine and what settings are you using?
If you have a data-capable machine and are using it faithfully, the sleep study data is "history" and can be a long way from "reality".
What really matters now it the data from your machine.

Since you slept only 101 minutes, your time in desaturation was 0.4*101= 4 minutes.
0.4% of sleep time is 0.004 times the sleep time, so 0.004*101 = 0.404 minutes (24.24 seconds).
