I feel for you. I made it to my 40's before it hit me hard. I'm sure it's a real challenge at your age. It's a real challenge for me right now! In hindsight, I wish I had a chance to do this at your age so that I could have been well and not go through this rough patch at my age with my family. Funny thing about being young....we never know how we'll feel in 20 years and how much certain things will mean to us.

I encourage you to explore all your options, but do keep monitoring things closely. You can lose a lot of your life to apnea, and I'm not talking just about the health side!

I too have ahi in the upper range of mild. I stop breathing for 45 seconds to over a minute around 20 times in a 30 minute or period. Scary right! As you are exploring other options, make sure you look at your data from a few nights on the machine just to make sure you know what that mild apnea is really all about. Not even every ahi under 5 is healthy. If you don't want to use the machine, at least get your hands on a oximeter and make sure your oxygen levels are ok with your untreated apnea. It pays to be cautious and know everything you can as you make your decisions.

I wish you the very best, and there will always be people here to help no matter what treatment route you choose.

Best,

Mike

You couldn't pay me enough to get me to revisit being 22 again.

Good luck

Although its obvious that cpap is the most effective therapy, I really couldn't be bothered to keep tinkering with it, especially at this age. Having a CPAP would put many more restraints on my life than a appliance would. The ENT said that the obstruction is due to my tongue, and therefore I just plan to use the dental appliance till I graduate college in December of this year. Once I have a steady job, I am hoping to take a shot at tongue coblation surgery.
KarD786,

I respectfully disagree that you are a quitter. Since dental appliance have been shown to be effective for mild apnea, you're not giving up on treatment which should be the main focus.

But as an FYI, I would be be very careful about any type of surgery and make sure you ask the surgeon what his/her success rates are in getting the AHI below 5 and what the average amount of years that would be for. Nate S., a wonderful and informative poster, cautioned not to let the surgeon provide general information and make sure this person gives statistics based on his/her cases.

Best of luck to you.
