Newbie: Looking For Airfit P10-Hints to Make This Work

Post by jaycee2 » Sun Dec 28, 2014 9:59 am

I am trying to use a Resmed Airfit P10. What works for you? Any hints to make this successful?

I tried the Medium pillows and they leaked, very noisy and hurt the nostrils from the get-go. I moved up to the Large pillows and they were much quieter as far as leaks and more comfortable but after an hour the nostrils started throbbing. I tried adjusting the headgear, making it loser but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Is this normal, part of the break in process? I have the Lansinoh in a tube. Do I put a light coating in the nostrils or on the pillows themselves? I also seemed to have a bit of a problem exhaling. The pressure relief is on, to the max which I think is 3. Humidity is set on 3 out of 8.

This experiment was only for an hour and I was awake. Thanks for your help.

Did you change the mask declaration on your A10? Your tenderness is normal and usually goes away in time. Some members have reported that they reduced this sensitivity by wearing the mask while watching TV or reading. I would put the Lansinoh directly on the affected area. Good luck.

Yes, I did remember to change the setting to nasal pillows. Wearing them while awake watching TV might work, it's worth considering. Thanks.

I'm going on one week of using the P10's and had the sore nose issue for the first four days but it's gradually getting more comfortable. I apply a thin coating of the Lansinoh around the inside of my nostrils and a little on the part just outside the opening. I think we just need to hang in there, I'm told the second week gets much better. Some nights i feel the exhale is a little difficult when first starting out, other nights it seems fine. So I've come to the conclusion (at least in my case) that some of it might be psychological.

my nose didn't take kindly to the piliaro q, or the p10, but the p10 was much better than the q... but it took a couple weeks, at first, I'd wear the p10 part of the night then switch back to my FFM, and worked up to the p10 all the time.

I'd use about a bb sized amount of the lanolin on my delicate lil nose, smeared all over and around, a tiny bit goes a long way.

Reading the reviews on this mask and there are some complaints about difficult exhalation. Have any of you noticed this?

*inhalation* felt restricted to me till I went to the large pillows.... didn't notice anything about exhalation.

My P10 experience has been good, but here are a few of my tips:

Use the top strap to adjust tightness, bring forward or backward to find the 'comfort spot'.

If the entire headgear if too tight, stretch it around a bowl or lampshade to loosen the elastic.

Too loose? Wash in warm water (by hand) & let dry, finishing with a blow dryer helps. This was my problem at first, but I understand more people find this headgear tight.

If you have long hair, try the pony tail method - put hair in loose pony, slip bottom strap below pony, upper strap on top, then remove the pony holder. You can then manage strap tension with hair in between the straps. This is the method I use.

If you need the pillows kinda 'lifted' use "O' rings found in the plumbing supply area of Home Depot, Lowes & stores like them. I use a size 11 on a medium pillow. I would suggest a size 12 for a large pillow. Just put the 'O' ring over the nostril area (this takes some fine motor skill & patience). This 'lifts' the pillow closer to your nostril for better fit. I got this tip from another forum member & it helped me to be able to wear pillows.

Hopefully something here will help. Good luck,
Jen

Thanks, everyone. Interesting about using "O" rings. I am most concerned right now about the nostrils throbbing. Is the throbbing part of the toughening up process? Granted it's only been an hour and I tried it while awake but I think the throbbing might wake me up. Anyone else have this?

On my Swift FX I used a medium pillows. With my P10 I use large pillows. Every night just before putting on the mask I wipe around my nostrils with a little Aloe Vera Gel. That seems for help me.

unless she's got an incredibly tiny nose, or is just madly in love with pink, tell her to get the regular, not her, version, and insist they give her all three sizes of pillows.

I put together a clip that really limits the amount of mask pulling. By clipping my hose to my shirt whenever I toss or turn the hose pulls on the clip instead of on my mask. See my topic and PM me if you would like me to send you one.

I had the very sore nostrils (to the point of taking off the mask at night because of the throbbing) problem for the first few weeks with the P10. Used the Lansinoh and my encouragement from this forum to stick it out, and sure enough, it seemed my nostrils toughened up. I was enjoying great results with the P10 for several weeks - stopped using the Lansinoh because all seemed so well. And then quite abruptly, the sore nostrils (actually it was just the left side) came back with a vengeance - skin rubbed raw. I was at my Dermatologist for something else, and he commented, "What the heck happened to your nose?!" It was bad and of course I had to stop the P10.

I tried going back to my Simplex FFM, but after having enjoyed the "freedom" of the P10 for so long, the FFM seemed so overly cumbersome. I tried my ComfortGel Blue nasal mask, but that thing hurts my upper lip no matter how I adjust the fit. So I bought a Wisp, and that has allowed me to continue my therapy while my nose healed. I really like the Wisp. Almost as comfortable as the P10, and actually I'm getting slightly better AHI numbers with it.

My nose has healed now. But the episode was so bad, I'm kind of afraid of going back to the P10 so I'm considering just sticking with the Wisp. I've heard of some folks here who alternate between masks for this reason, and I'm thinking about trying that too. Although that's just one more thing to worry about with the therapy. Maybe I had the problem because I quit using the Lansinoh? Perhaps I'll try using that consistently and see if I can go back to my beloved (for awhile anyway!) P10!

My experience,
Pete

Thanks for the posts. I tried the P10 for the full night and managed to keep it on. There was some pinching of the cartilage between the nostrils. Also the pillows seemed to push the nostrils up as well as enlarge them. I wore the headgear over a thin fleece cap (it's cold here) and it worked fine. I am going to review the videos on the Airfit P10 to see if there are more hints there.
