mefornow wrote:Greetings from a slightly confused newcomer, there are several forums on the net. Think others may also be confused, from my readings I think there was a previous forum that lost traction because the DME establishment or doctors were overly influential.

Two weeks I joined one that seemed quite independent, (apneaboard. com) . Two days after joining, the site went down with no warning. Still not back online under addy. Could be several reasons for that.

This site is closely affiliated with a supplier, is that a good thing? Just trying to understand the pitfalls as I'm after independent advice from the users of apnea therapy. There are politics behind the scenes, can anyone provide a link to educate me on the history of these forums and who created them and motives if there are any.

Seasons Greeting to all.
In addition to what the others said, the ASAA (apneasupport.org) forum was pretty much funded by the manufacturers.
That was probably the reason for that forum being so tightly moderated (couldn't give instructions on how to change machine settings or provide links to other sources, etc.) and contributed to their (possible) demise. The manufacturers are tightly connected to the brick and mortar DMEs and don't want the end users to know any more about their own therapy than they have to. It's all about "control" (and money).

This forum is about as independent as they come (or possibly could be) and is (in my opinion) here to actually HELP the users.

The forum sponsors, cpap.com, have stated their philosophy as being supportive of the cpap USER,
and this forum is IMHO, the very gentlest form of self promotion.
They are one of several reasonably priced sources of equipment and supplies, (for the insurance-deficient)
and links to the competition have been permitted--with honest discussion always to follow.

Thanks to all that replied,

I'm less confused and a little more comfortable about signing in. Been able to benefit from many of the posts I've read to date.

Possibly only able to be able to help newcomers while the experience is fresh in my mind but will participate when my limited knowledge allows.

Seeing as how the other forum crashed immediately after my joining, I wish you all the best

I know what that feels like. When looking at my work history, I was shocked to realize that
over fifteen places had gone out of business within a year of my leaving.
(Honestly, I had nothing to do with it!)

This forum can feel a bit like the Wild West because it is only very lightly moderated, but I love it for that reason. I get to say my piece and if I'm not happy with a poster I just ignore them, and there's some self policing that goes on, mainly to protect newbies who haven't yet gotten the lay of the land.

I'm about to be banned from another forum and I will view it as a badge of courage if it happens. Nearly happened on the Apnea Support Forum, too. Illegitimi non carborundum.

I have mixed emotions. I was furious at their previous heavy handed policy but it did seem like they were trying to change their ways even if it wasn't nearly fast enough for us. And of course, they were never going to be another cpaptalk.com.

And I also feel bad for posters who visited there regularly who might not be aware of other apnea support forums. Hopefully, they have consulted Google but you never know.

Hi if you follow your link you're probably landing on their maintenance page. Hover your cursor over your link and you would see

http://www.sleepapnea.org /support/ forum-maintenance.html

(I broke the link so it is not followable. If you were to land there, and backspace on the address to what I've left blue you will land on their front page.
