Back Sleeping and Snoring

Post by Sheriff Buford » Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:30 am

Ran the wife outta' the bedroom last night. I love sleeping on my back even though I know that is not best for me. She tells me I start to snore thru my mask on my back. My AHI was a .2 last night... which is normal. My thinking is that snoring is an INDICATION of apnea, but just because a person snores doesn't necessarily mean an apnea occurs. She says my snoring is getting worse, but my events are normal.

What are your thoughts?

I think that if you snore, your pressure might not be adequate to get any events that might occur (whether or not you continue to snore) or else stay off your back. It's a red flag and you might be playing semantics with yourself, but I think you know better.

snoring is seen as a precursor to apnea, it's an airway that's not open enough. that's why the auto paps raise pressure when they detect snoring.

if your machine couldn't raise the pressure enough when it thinks you're having problems, then you might consider raising it's max ipap setting.

What do your reports show?
MY thinking is that "snoring" is an indication of nasal congestion/obstruction......on inhale. I suppose the folks who engineered the software considered them to be a possible loss of intake air and precursors to apneas. Consequently, they programmed the machines to increase pressure on snoring and flow limitations.
Can either be nasal or mouth snoring. If you have difficulty breathing through the nose, then the mouth has to open and get the air that way. The tongue can then be an obstacle to mouth breathing.
When I started out, I had horrendous snoring numbers (in the "hundreds") but very low AHI (less than 1.0). Eventually, I came up with my own routine for nasal cleansing and bumped my pressure up by a couple of centimeters and that pretty much took care of it, along with only using cool, passover humidification. My snore indexes are now generally less than 0.5.

I took Palerider's advice and bumped my straight cpap pressure to 15. Had a great night...snore-free. For what it's worth, I seem to feel better too. It's just one night.

And you also changed your "Additional comments", too. I was wondering how you were still snoring with the pressure range you had listed.

Anyway, glad to hear you got it ironed out.

Back-sleeping is now being promoted as better for your pretty face, Sheriff, so don't kick yourself too hard!

And MY thoughts are that you enjoy giving your wife something to nag you about, and this is seen as generally harmless fun. I suggest tying her shoes together instead. Tell her you did it in your now SNORE FREE sleep. Might not be a SAFER pastime for you, but at least OSA won't be what kills ya.
