Interpreting Sleepyheads and Overall event questions

Post by MMartin730 » Fri Dec 19, 2014 9:07 pm

I just wanted to ask a couple questions about common apneas people experience.

I read up about hypopneas and obstructive and central but curious about their patterns in most people. I know everyone is different though. so here's the questions.

Are Hypopneas not as serious as obstructive? Wasn't unsure if "shallow" breathing was better than not breathing in OSA.

Do Hypopneas usually happen in clusters seeing that it's shallow breaths? I have noticed a lot of large clusters on my sleepyhead but they seem to be mainly hypopneas with the occasional OA.. The cluster I am looking at is only 15 minutes long but has 5 OA's and 19 H's..

Seems like every couple nights one CA event is recorded. Is it common to misread an event occasionally or occasionally have a rouge CA while having OSA? I was under the impression CPAPs/APAPs are effective on OSA but a biPAP is needed for CSA...

Lastly, how would you hook up an oximeter to your machine and view with sleepyhead? I searched all around and I found plenty of oximeters but wasn't sure if they are supposed to connect to the CPAP or separate or need some sort of way of logging.. etc.. I have the Resmed AirSense 10.

And lastly, does resscan give any info sleepyhead doesnt?

Thanks!

I want to preface this by saying that this is just my opinion. . .

Hypopneas and OSA's; I would say the OSA's would be considered more serious since your not getting any oxygen. The length of the OSA or the hypopnea is an important factor to consider. A lot of mine are only about 10 to 15 seconds which I don't see as a real biggie, especially if they are spread out. Clusters of OSA's on a regular basis might indicate that a pressure increase is in your future. Clusters of hypopneas are beyond my current knowledge. The recording of CA's, OSA's and hypopneas are all determined by a computer algorithm. It can and does make a mistake on what it thinks is happening. To some extent the difference of 1 second can make the difference between it recording an event or not logging anything.

The only Resmed xPAP that I know that had an oximeter option was the S9 and it seems to have been a special order. I haven't seen it listed at any CPAP supplier sites as an add on. I use the CMS-50F oximeter with SleepyHead version 0.9.8.1-testing. Your options are: 50D+, 50E, and the 50F. The 50FW is the bluetooth version of the 50F and is not directly compatible. To use the oximeter with SH, you first import your CPAP data then import the data from the oximeter. The import can be directly from the models I listed earlier or you can import it from the oximeter's .SpO2 data file. One side note in using these oximeters, each time you start the recording, the unit will overwrite the old data. So once you start recording for the night don't stop.

There's also the 50H and the 50I possibly the 60 series too, though we'd have to see the data format.

the I is like the F, only with multiple session capability. I think the wrist mounted F and I models are most comfortable to wear overnight, much less hanging on your finger.
