DIY Humidifier Chamber Question

Post by JDS74 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:33 pm

Has anyone made changes to a PR System humidifier chamber so that it holds more water?
I realize that the water level cannot safely be raised but wonder if some sort of external extension could be fabricated.

It would have to be a sealed container and there should (perhaps?) be connections above and below the water line to equalize the pressure.

Beyond that, any ideas?

The thought has crossed my mind... I work in a hospital and on our ventilators and bipaps we use a bag of sterile water that drips into the heated chamber... Kind of like an IV bag, so that it never runs out of water (at least until the liter bag is empty).

I've thought that it would be cool if something like this could be rigged to my PRS1, but never actually looked that indepth at it.

Is the heated chamber just a pass-over chamber on intake to the device?
Or is it in the circuit so the air is pressurized?

I don't have anything meaningful to add, I'm just curious why you want this. I have a different system but even just putting a small amount of water in the chamber I never run out. Are you consuming a lot more water?

Yes, my humidifier runs out almost every night. It holds about 11 ounces and I may be able to go through a whole night with another 3 or 4 ounces.

People who use the Oracle mask like I do use much more water than other mask designs.

You should never run out of water in one night. You may use more or less water depending on the humidity level in your room, but still... you should not run dry. Call your DME and ask for a replacement while your humidifier is being repaired.

This is my third machine and all did the same thing.
My setting is 5 in System One mode.
I'm reasonably sure its not defective.

I can usually get 7.5 hours out if my tank set at "5" at 11 cm ... And my FFM Mirage Quattro ...

I have been wondering if it would be possible to extend the tank also.

I use the humidifier on the lowest setting (1) with the heated hose set on 2. If I fill the tank to the full line it is empty in the morning. I would like to try a higher setting on the humidifier but it will only run dry if I do.

I talked to a PR rep about the humidifier running dry and he said it was OK to slightly overfill the tank, as long as the water level is below the air inlet tube. If I fill the tank until the water touches the bottom of the air inlet tube there is about 1/8" of water over the plate in the morning.

The Encore software shows that my leaks never get into large leak territory.

You guys got me curious about the water capacities of the machines.
Here's a comparison if you haven't done it yet.
As you can see, the older Respironics Legacy Series and M Series did hold more than the newer ones.
I added the S9 capacity for comparison.

Legacy Models
Water Capacity: 1 2/3 cups (400 ml) at recommended water level

M Series
Water Capacity: 1 2/3 cups (400 ml) at recommended water level

System One
Water Capacity: 1 1/3 cups (325 ml) at recommended water level

S9
Water Capacity 380 mL - To maximum fill line

If you are comfortable with drilling the container, plumbing fittings, and the hardware aisle at Home Depot, you could connect another container to it at the bottom. The water levels in both containers will naturally equalize. In theory, you could have infinite capacity.

The F&P HC150 (standalone) also has a capacity of 400 ml.

Call Respironics and ask them if this is normal. Been there... done that...

i am considering doing this my self. I was told by my rt to use room humidification but i have woken up and refilled my water and still ran out by morning. I don't think this old farm house will home enough humidity. Furthermore my humidity was fine but my pressure was not. Once i got my pressure increased to where it needs to be i can't keep water. It gets so bad i wake up with completely dry mouth, it's so bad i have tooth pain in the am
