S9 and 12V power

Post by Mycopsycho » Sat Aug 28, 2010 3:42 pm

I plan to take a trip in my travel trailer soon during which I would like to spend a day or two here and there off the grid utilizing the 12V power in my trailer. The problem is my ResMed S9 cpap machine and H5i humidifier. Will I have to use an inverter to run my S9? and what about my humidifier? I've seen some other threads about the humidifier using a lot of power and the suggestion to not connect it. Since the two parts snap together and the humidifier gets its power through the cpap, I'm not sure how to connect my hose directly to the cpap to bypass the humidifier. Anybody out there using their cpap in an RV off the grid?

When you disconnect the humidifier the hose connects straight to the CPAP no problem. Thats how I use mine. I have not took it traveling yet so not sure about the 12V issue.

The S9 power supply provides 24V to the S9, therefore you cannot power the S9 directly with 12V. However, you can use a 300 watt inverter to power the S9 and H5i. Earlier Resmed units required a pure sine wave inverter (expensive), but the S9 will operate with the more common modified sine wave inverter. You can turn the H5i off by changing from auto humidity control to manual and then setting humidity to 0 or off. the H5i will now be in passover mode to give you some humidity.

Just to be clear, the S8 xPAPs will run on a modified sine wave inverter or on 12V directly. The H4i (and H3i) humidifiers require 120 V AC, either from the wall or from a pure sine wave inverter.

Thanks, Steve. This is exactly the information I needed.

Didn't Resmed promise a DC cord for the S9's to come out this summer?
Well, summer's nearly over, guys.
Folks are waitin' to use the privy.

Someone (I forget who) reported that ResMed let the S9 DC connector schedule slide until Fall (which just happens to be Spring in Australia.) It's not a high-priority (i.e. high-profit) item for them.

Bernie

If you are not using the H5i don't forget to take the regular slim line hose and not the climateline one.

If i remember correctly the climateline one does not connect to the S9 directly, its can only connect via the humidifier.

The latest word from Resmed on the 12V battery converter for the S9 is this....
ResMed Technical Services wrote:... the news is not so good, the converter has slipped again and now not expected until November-ish. It is quite frustrating I know, however the product is definitely on the accessory list for the new S9 machine and is not in any way going to be dropped.
Cheers,

Bill
