Frustrating visit to the dr regarding asthma. Dejected.

Incidentally, the primary go-to med for mild asthma isn't a steroid it's albuterol, but it may be contraindicated if you have an underlying issue with anxiety.

I'm interested that your food allergies were causing breathing problems. What foods specifically were the culprits, if you don't mind saying? I'm lactose intolerant but I will still eat cheese now and again with a lactaid pill.Ogeo wrote:I was diagnosed with asthma quite awhile ago but hardly ever used an inhaler. I got to the point that I could not take a deep breathe without going into a coughing fit. After changing doctors, he had me see a respiratory specialist in house. My lung capacity was way under where I should be for someone my age and weight. So I was given a schedule and ended up using my inhaler every 2-3 hours a day and saw no improvement. My doctor told me to stop using the inhaler since it was doing no good. There are a lot of things that can cause breathing problems besides asthma. He first checked my heart and lungs. They were okay. Then came the sleep study and allergy testing which both came out with problems. So I am now on a AutoSv and can no longer eat lots of foods I normally took for granted. Best thing about it, my breathing capacity is gradually improving.
If you are not satisfied with the advice of your doctor, change doctors! I know you are limited in who you can see with your insurance so call around and see who is taking new patients on Medicaid.

Hard cheese does not have lactose in it. Both yogurt and cheese making processes uses up the lactose sugars. If you still react when eating them then you also have a different issue then lactose intolerance.RyanMW wrote:

Everyone is different with respect to allergies and intolerance. Foods which cause inflammation are difficult to catch due to the time frame and subtleties in the reactions. For people with celiacs gluten can make asthmatic reactions worse but it can take months to get it to stop after you stop eating wheat etc.

Your doctor sounds like a complete idiot. I've had asthma all my life and that is some b.s. Not all inhalers are steroids and not all people with asthma need the steroid inhalers. I don't use them at all, just the salbutemol (albuterol). Be sure to get it worked out with a competent doctor, but once you do, there are places online you can buy inhalers really cheap and without a prescription.

It's probably more important to be able to breathe than to not have an anxiety/panic attack. I mean, since not breathing can kill you, anxiety, while it feels like it's going to kill you, won't. There are also medications for anxiety that can help offset the CNS stimulation albuterol can cause.Kennerly wrote:Incidentally, the primary go-to med for mild asthma isn't a steroid it's albuterol, but it may be contraindicated if you have an underlying issue with anxiety.
