I think more people should explore pass over humidifiers

Post by herefishy » Thu Nov 27, 2014 3:12 pm

I felt congested when I was first starting out on CPAP, lo these many years ago, so junked the humidifier - and felt better. No worrying about cleaning the tank, distilled water, running out, etc. Then I couldn't get the quiet I craved from my system, so read somewhere to put in a pass over humidifier, as it has numerous baffles to defeat the sounds. My point is, if you don't need humidification, leave it dry as I do, and if you need extra humidification because you're running out of water, the pass over should maybe keep the other humidifier from running out. Just my 2 cents worth, but it might help someone.

Pretty much the same as others have said since ways before I joined this forum...bump humidity up or down or off, based on your needs.

After suffering for decades with dry, crusty nasal passages, I love my thirsty little bedside companion.
The only thing worse than always needing to mine for nuggets is to get caught hitting the mother lode.

I don't think you understood my point about the Pass over humidifiers - if you need more humidity than you are getting from your H5I or whatever, you can use the passover to add it and not run out of your regular humidifier, and if you are getting noise from your machine, you can just add it dry or wet inline with your hoses, it serves lots of purposes.

This sounds like a great thing to try. Since I only use a heated hose, it never occurred to me.
(Silly froggie!)

I would be plenty shocked if I ran into that!

Tyrone, these are flat, 2 piece containers with a piece on each end for attaching you cpap hose. You can put water in them or not.

I gave up on putting water in my built in, heated humidifier. I kept getting rainout and humid air blowing into my nostrils made me feel like I'm suffocating. So I gave it up and improvised.

I bought a separate cold air humidifier and put it on my side of the bedroom somewhat near the CPAP machine. Then I put several drops of an essential oil (I alternate between eucuplyutus and peppermint oil) on a cotton ball and place that near the intake on CPAP. So in effect the CPAP machine is pulling in cool, slightly moist, freshly scented air.

Works like a charm so far.

I joined the ranks of the hose heads right at the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Now, if you understand orthodox Judaisim, you understand that the concept of observing the "no work" rule on the Sabbath means that you can't do certain things on the Sabbath. Very Orthodox Jews, for example, will not turn a light on or off (they often use timers in the bedrooms and leave bathroom lights on all night). That's because using an electrical switch creates a "spark" and that spark is starting a fire--a forbidden form of "work" on the Sabbath. And so people who live in multi-story apartment buildings in NY, for example, have all sorts of elaborate systems so that they can ride the elevator up to the forty-eleventh floor or whatever--because pressing the button on the elevator is forbidden. (Yes, much of this absolutely defies logic, I agree).

So I came to this board and kept hearing people refer to "Passover mode" and wracked my brains trying to figure out why there were so many Orthodox Jews on this forum and why it was necessary to have a special "Passover mode" for CPAP machines.

Yes, I agree, I'm kind of slow that way!

My PR machine's humidifier has given up the ghost, I think because of corrrosion another poster wrte about. I'm not able to do an elaborate repair myself, and I can think of ten thousand things I'd rather do that deal with Crapria about this, so for now I'm putting up with perpetual "passover mode". I HATE this in winter because it's so darn cold--we don't use heat in our house at night. But it's still better than arguing with Crapria.

Seems it would have been a lot easier to turn the humidifier to a lower setting.

Trust me, Chicago Granny, I did. For me the issues were the temp of the air (too warm for my liking) and the rainout. We like to keep the bedroom pretty cold, and the heated humidifier still created rainout even on lower settings.
