No help whatsoever

Post by bertyhay » Thu Nov 20, 2014 2:00 am

I have a Philips Remstar Auto System one.The booklet that came with the machine tells me almost nothing. The lady at the drug store knew nothing. It is set on 4 and thats all i know.I dont know how to set it to change the humidity or anything.I use the nasal pillows which i like if the machine would just behave.Water running down my face, sometimes the air is cool sometimes warm.So glad i found this site, since i have no help elsewhere.I do have an appt with my sleep specialist later this month, but truthful he doesnt seem to know much about the machines either. He told me to go to the drug store and ask them.lol,Maybe this is connected, i now have to clear my throat constantly, i cough,I have had pneumonia and bronchitis both since i started using this machine which may not have any connection to the machine. This is the first time anyone ever said anything to me about mold, I have been very lax about cleaning hoses etc cause i couldnt see why with it using sterile water it would be dirty, yeah i know how stupid that sounds.OK well glad to be here.My friend is going to be using the cpap so i will be sure and send her here.

I'm sure in the morning someone will come along and let you know how to get the manual for your machine. That will be a good start. As to the humidity, everyone is different so it's going to be a matter of finding what works for you. I know if I turn mine up I get congestion and drainage and start coughing. Hopefully things will be better for you real soon. As far as water in your face, until you can figure out your settings, it might help to place the machine much lower than your head, or if you have a headboard, maybe hang it over the headboard if your hose length allows. Just makes it a tad bit harder for any moisture accumulating in the hose to reach your face if gravity is pulling it the other way. Good luck going forward.

I think on that machine you dial it to settings ( which will take you to some minor settings if you push the big button) To get to the main menu...dial it to settings...then you press the big and small button down at the same time....for say 10 to 15 seconds and it will beep and take you to the main menu to change settings on pressure. I could be all wrong but I think that will work. Seems whoever prescribed the machine to you would help you more than they have about setting it up. Some people set it to auto mode and a wide range...say 5-15 and let it rip....but everyone different I guess. The humidity levels should be in one or both of those setting menus. Probably one, two and three. Three being the most humidity....one the least. Again I may be wrong about all this...just a guess as it looks simular to my machine. I'd be sure to ask your prescribing doctor what pressures and settings are right for you. Perhaps someone will come along more knowledgeable than myself later today that can help you more.

Your humidity level is the lighted number around the knob (start/stop button if you have to hit to start/stop machine). Turn the knob to adjust the humidity level. Smaller the number, the less humidity you will receive.

Turn your machine over (remove water chamber first if it has water in it) and look for a 3 digit number with maybe DS, REF or P in front or behind it.
Most likely will be 560 but might be 550..tell me that model number and I will get you pointed to the clinical/provider manual for that machine.
Also..if you have the 560 model...does your hose have a black end on it where it attaches to the humidifier?
If you do then you have additional options in terms of humidity and temperature settings.

Your machine may be set in auto mode. It may start out on a pressure of 4 and go up once you are sleeping if needed. Once you get the providers manual we can help you determine what the machine settings are. Don't go changing the pressure settings yet. It doesn't sound like the pressure is a problem, and your machine may be "auto-titrating" that is, recording data on your pressures so your doctor can see what pressures you need.

But you can already change the humidifier and move the machine to a lower spot and/or route the hose so that condensed water will flow back into the machine instead of your face. You probably don't even need to go into the clinicians manual for changing the humidity setting unless the provider completely locked you out.

If you are using a nasal pillow mask, there's almost always some condensation right at the nasal pillow if your room is cold no matter what else you do because your nose is warmer than the air.

Actually if the heated hose is used with a 60 series machine the only way to change humidity is in the clinical setup menu. When the heated hose is attached the knob on top of the blower only changes air temperature.
That's why I try to figure out if a person is already using the heated hose or not.
