Very interesting read, I wonder if he ever called them back to see if they would take it back for repair.

I'll let you know if I spot any followups. saw someone the other day saying they'd smelled 'burned plastic smells' from their 50 series.

not really something you want for a gadget supplying your air.

I always thought they were off the hook if you open it yourself.

there aren't any "warranty void if sticker removed" like you find on hard drives in any of the machines I've opened.

with even a little bit of care, you can open and close up a s9 or prs1 without any evidence that you'd peaked inside.

though I wouldn't necessarily SAY "I opened this up and look at this shoddy workmanship I found!" ... in this particular situation, I'd carefully close it back up, and contact someone with a "this thing smells like burning plastic sometimes, I'm afraid it's going to poison me in my sleep".

my personal theory is that for the longest time, the prevailing attitude was

DON'T THINK FOR YOURSELF! TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR, OBEY YOUR DOCTOR! and absolutely nothing else.

and they pretty much drove away anybody that wasn't just looking to be told to go see their doctor.

their new director told me that she wanted to change that attitude, and promote more self help, but I haven't seen any actual movement in that direction.

This sounds like what might have happened to me with the first 760 p that I received from the DME. I got ready to try out my first night of therapy, filled the tank, put on my mask and went to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night with my throat burning. I took off the mask and there was the smell of plastic burning thru out the whole house. I called the DME the next day and asked if the machine was suppose to stink on the first use. I was told it might be some oil residue left over from manufacturing, and to try it again. Well the house still stunk from the burning smell, so I got worried and called PR customer service. They asked a bunch of questions, including if I was injured, then told me to take it back to the DME. When I arrived at the DME they were quite nervous, explained that PR could pull their franchise because they did not deal with it properly, and told me to never call them again... Yeah, right... I will call whoever I need to.. To make a long story short, they wound up replacing the machine with another new one. I have had no problem since.

Moral of the story. Dont let anyone tell you not to worry about strange smells coming from a brand new machine. It is NOT normal.

it *is* normal for there to be a faint perfumy/powdery smell when they're new (at least, that's what my nose smells) I've smelled it on both PRs1 and resmed new or near new machines, the first time was a nearly brand new prs1 that I bought from a lady and thought it had just picked up some perfumy smells from her bedroom. then I smelled it again in another couple machines, I think it's 'new silicone smell'.

however, it's very faint, and only smelled in the mask... there really should be no smells from the machine.

your DME deserves whatever bad things happen to them, that could have been disasterous for you.

The big problem with cpap machines smoking is that the smoke is sucked up by the machine, and fed directly into the face mask. A person could die from smoke inhalation very quickly if the machine caught fire. Being new to the therapy I really did not know if there was a "break in" smell to the machine, or not. Working around electronic for many years, I suspected that the smell was due to burnt wires.

On the machine I had, the smoke was coming from the humidifier. It smelled very strong on the water chamber. Yes, before anyone asks the chamber was full. They replaced the whole machine, on the chance that the electronics in the machine could have caused the humidifier to overheat.

I use Pur-Sleep on a cotton ball next to the intake.
So soothing, puts me right to sleep.
I don't even notice if I tossed my icky socks in the corner by the nightstand.

Either the site was down or your machine is blocking access to it.

They are blocking my IP. I have tested it with an anonymizer. Don't they like my internet provider, don't they like Germans looking at their site?!

It doesn't matter really, now I can read and understand the thread ... thanks!
