S9 VAP Bilevel Auto - Hum Tank ran dry this morning

Post by Krelvin » Sat Oct 25, 2014 9:42 am

This morning I woke up to the smell of heated air not moist air. I took off the mask and checked the tank and it was completely empty. I slept just over 8 hours without getting up last night.

Since I got the machine, I've wondered how the humidity actually works. I have a heated hose and when it is connected the only settings available are for the hose temp. I normally keep it at 60F the lowest setting or off.

However, I have wondered if the humidity setting which is hidden is still being used even when the heated hose is connected. So this morning, I took off the heated hose and found it was set to 3.0.

I changed it to 1.0. On my previous machine an M-Series, I always used the lowest setting if I was using heat and a lot of time just kept it off.

Anyone know if the humidity setting is still active when you are using the heated hose? Seems strange that you have no access to that when the heated hose is connected.

Will check it again in the morning to see if the water use is less.

Located in Arizona where it is again very dry so a lot of water is used under normal.

With the Climateline heated hose connected the default setting for the humidifier and humidity selection is automatic and it is for 80% humidity at whatever temperature you choose.
That setting of 3.0 that you saw when you removed the heated hose was NOT what you were getting with the humidifier set to automatic.
That setting of 3.0 is simply the default setting from the factory for non heated hoses just like the default from the factory is for "automatic" when the heated hose gets connected and the only setting available is for the temperature because the humidity is already programmed in at 80%.

You can change it so that with the ClimateLine attached the settings available are both humidity and air temp by taking it off "automatic" in the setup menu.

Water consumption when the Climateline heated hose is attached is going to vary based on the ambient humidity primarily but also leak and pressures used.

think of it like turning the model to cpap, then dialing in a 'set pressure' of 5, then turning the mode to vauto, and your 'set pressure' is 'hidden', but now you have maxipap and minepap and ps. whatever you adjusted 'set pressure' to makes no difference in vauto mode.

At the clinicians menu's and at the option menu under Options, I changed Climate Ctrl to Manual

Image

After exiting, I now had more settings on the main screen:

Image

Under Humidity Level, I set it to 0.5 (it was 3.0)

Image

Under Heated Tube, I set it to 60F (was 80F)

Image

Will check it out tonight and see how it does and adjust from there.

Two nights with the setting change and the use of water is greatly reduced. Less than 1/2 a tank with about 8hrs of use.

Not unexpected results..you reduced the humidity from 3.0 to 0.5..that's a big reduction.
Must be rather dry where you live to use 1/2 tank with such a reduced setting.

This is somewhat irrelevant as I am on the S9 AutoSet, but just for reference I run with my unit on Auto with the ClimateLine tube so the machine is shooting for 80% RH. Up here in Denver where humidity is very low, if I am on the hose for any more than 7 hours I will run the humidifier tub dry from a full tank. I have gotten used to topping off when I wake around 4am from a small pint size water bottle I keep on the bedside table.....it's a little bit of a pain to do that, but I love the humid air I am breathing because it is so dry here, my sinuses are markedly better with the humid PAP air I am breathing at night, sinuses are more clear than they ever were before cpap, it's been a real positive side effect of my cpap therapy.

Phoneix Metro Area... the Dry Heat Place... so it is very dry now that the monsoon season is over.... It is most likely less than a 1/2 tank used.... could be only 1/4 used, but clearly not near empty though.

My M-Series typically was off with water in the tank most of the time.

Ahh...you are used to it.
My poor nose would be calling me every bad name in the book.
I used to live in Vegas and my nose was always unhappy there (pre cpap though). Now when I go back for a visit I crank that baby up and just plan on filling it daily.

I am in southern Missouri and there's a reason people hate the hot humid south and I am not even that far south.
When my daughter comes in the summer the first thing she says when we go out of the airport....OMG it's so frigging humid here...and she used to live here 20 something years ago. Still hates the humidity.
Even now it's 68% and we haven't had rain anywhere near here for over a week.
Probably why my nose needs to snort water to be happy...it's all it has ever known for the bulk of my life.

I went the San Diego a couple weeks back and felt hot due to the humidity there. I come off the Lizard family tree.

Since the original change, I have moved Humidity up from 0.5 to 1.0, 1.5 and now 2.0. It has been at 2.0 now for about 4 days and is working great. Uses about 1/2 of a tank now.

Getting cooler at night and still dry outside.
