also - on buckwheat

Post by andy5805 » Thu Oct 23, 2014 10:48 am

also to all you helpful guys while I have a bad week can you help on this?

2 weeks ago I bought a bunch of buckwheat and made my own pillow- I'd heard some of you saying how great it was and when I lay on it I thought "this is the answer " as the mask did not slip and there were no leaks! I was so happy until I was not asleep four hours later with hurting neck - it seems my neck is hard wired to soft pillows - I need a buckwheat pillow but once again my primordial slow moving genetics are taking what THEY need - bad sleep, bad pillows, not what they can be told they need because sleep is such a stone age process, were it not we'd all just simply switch on the CPAP and turn out the lights never to suffer again - the mind is the body's worse enemy when it comes to sleep - it selfishly lays out what it wants, which is bad sleep - because its primate technology cannot take on board there has been a minor change in management in the throat and what was good 2 million years ago isnt' good now and if we're coming up with this alternative therapy there's good interest at heart and a reason for it, sometimes I wonder how the human body can be so self destructive in its selfish ambition for the wrong sleep and its rejection of CPAP which is there to save.

..
any tips please on how to make a backward cave man mind-set accept the goodness of a buckwheat pillow? how did you adapt ?

One thing I've noticed with the buckwheat pillow is the need to pay closer attention to being positioned comfortably before falling asleep. At first I felt like I needed the pillow to be fuller, but found it was more comfortable for my neck when not too full. Maybe you'll adjust. But neck pain is certainly something one must attend to as doing anything to contribute to the problem is counterproductive. Anyone who has had neck pain doesn't want that!

Personally, I found the buckwheat pillow very accommodating before I went to sleep. However, it turned out to be too hard and unforgiving to sleep on for a whole night for me. Went back to my old pillow with a sore ear before morning.

I keep trying to find a better pillow, but no luck yet. Actually this one isn't a big issue for me since I have a pillow that works pretty much, but I like to try new things in hopes of improving my sleep. Just like Goldilocks, looking for that "just right" feeling *smile*.

I've had a buckwheat (always think of the Little Rascals!! ) for almost a month... since that last thread saying how folks liked it. It is a hard pillow. It also took some "getting used to" and though I like it much better, I'm still getting used to it. Like KTeague stated, I found I need to "shape" it while initially lying down. I punch a spot for the head. I also have a bad neck, so I make a little "ridge" for the neck. I then "punch" the sides for the mask. To me, the jury is still out on this pillow. Though it has taken a while I suspect I'll eventually begin to like it. I have found that getting used to something in the sleep apnea world often takes time. But a pillow is like a mask... some may like it and some don't. Sometimes things work for me and not for others... and vice versa.

I got mine locally (relatively) from Birkett Mills in Penn Yan. They come overstuffed so I had to take out quite a few husks to get it adjusted. I've since added some back to tune it up. "IMHO" you need to do a little "husk wingin'".

Be sure the pillow is stuffed with buckwheat hulls...not buckwheat.

The weight difference is significant; the grain would smell different and attract vermin (except Apria)

thanks guys, as always you are amazing, your advice is great, I will try and take it on board.

kteague, -I'm coming at it backwards to you - I tried a half full pillow and it hurt so now I've stuffed it more, this is like either putting humidity up from 4 to 5 when you need 3 or to 3! I'll report back

sheriff, as an intelligent man, your point somehow escaped me but is also probably the most valid one, its a CPAP world of which the mask is a part of ( albeit a bloody important part!) perhaps if I keep trying knowing I "got " the mask after years of trying, maybe I'm looking at months, weeks even

LSAT - I couldn't reply to sheriff above as I have had I used buckwheat and not hulls, please be assured I got that bit right, I just got the sleep bit wrong!!

........I have loads of cats, I do not wish to attract "off menu" items for them to eat and leave for me , next to or in my bed!

some great tips here, thank you.

I tried this pillow (Buckwheat) along with several others over the years. Some were comfortable enough but didn't help my neck problem. A few weeks ago I was in Kohls and saw a pillow... I remember the name BIG on it... that had one small roll on one side, flat in the middle, and then a larger roll on the other side. I would guess that for a small person the small roll would work and a larger person would use the larger roll.

This pillow is by far the best pillow I've used. I bought it knowing Kohls had a great return policy; but I sure won't be needing it. There is some type of foam in both sides of the pillow - which is somewhat hard - and perfect for my neck. I don't wake up any longer with a terrible neck ache... sometimes a little sore but nothing like it was before this new pillow and after an hour or so, the soreness is pretty much gone. I remember it was under $30.00.

It works well (for me) with the Airfit P10 and the Swift FX. I don't have any experience with other masks.

I hope this helps someone. Remember that it can be returned if it doesn't work for you. I also think it can be ordered on line, but I'm not sure about that.
