Ambien CR vs. the Beach Boys

Post by 49er » Thu Oct 23, 2014 3:59 am

Due to an upcoming sleep study (hopefully it will be scheduled today after many hassles), the sleep doctor I saw a few weeks ago prescribed ambien CR in case I had trouble sleeping during it. I tried it one time to get back to sleep and it gave me a grand total of 1.5 hours. I know one time isn't enough data but this is pretty consistent with when I tried regular ambien and lunesta several times.

Last night, when I woke up early, I decided instead of getting up for good to see if I could at least wait to get my day started by listening to a video of the Beach Boys 50th reunion concert in the dark. After listening for about 30 minutes, I felt myself getting sleepy and fell back asleep for 2 more hours. Needless to say, the Beach Boys will be coming to my sleep study.

That's my experience with Ambien and it's generic, including the CR version (controlled release). I haven't tried Lunesta. I used to get all night sleep out of it years ago but now a couple of hours is the max. I'm pretty much off of all sleep meds these days, however I could use a few hours more of sleep a few times a week. I manage to get by though. When you go to the sleep study take along earplugs... my experience is the labs are noisy with people going to the bathroom, equipment humming, A/C units recycling and all sorts of other noise. I like the moldable silicone variety available at any drug store, but the other various types work fine too.

BTW, I don't know if the Beach Boys would get me to sleep... I'd be laying there thinking about the way-back days: cruising around with the board in the back, long hair blowing in the sea breeze and all the pretty girls in bikinis. I'd be awake all night if I started thinking about all that stuff too much I do love the Beach Boys music tho. I'll have to get that concert on CD.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Actually, I went to one of the Beach Boys' concerts.......about 50 YEARS AGO (I think 1964).......at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
I liked them then. Then, they got weird, did drugs and most of them died and sued each other and.......now......not a fan anymore.

I was twitchy about using any drugs for fear of changing my sleep patterns - not a good test design as I don't use them "normally". I did Ok at both studies without. Enough to get good diagnosis and a mediocre handle on pressure range (albeit by accident it worked - they set 10-20 and I average about 12)

Have not taken Ambien CR, but I have taken the generic. It works for me. That said, if I'm extremely anxious about something or my mind just won't turn off, it turns into a placebo for me and I don't get the least bit sleepy. I'm convinced there is a psychological component to this med which I haven't been able to figure out.

Oh yeah... if you have a choice, take the Beach Boys!

Well, listening to the tape didn't work too well to get me back to sleep this morning. But I had already slept 5 hours even though it was crappy sleep in spite of walking outside about 2 to 3 miles. Oh well.

SNO, thanks for the advice on taking earplugs to the sleep study. I will definitely buy some to take. Interesting you have had the same experience with the hypnotics after initial success. LOL at the rest of your comment.

DD, if there is a refrigerator in my room that is as noisy as mine can be during the day, I am in big trouble. Sorry you had that experience.

PR, you're giving me some ideas for sleep remedies in case I can't fall asleep at the study.

Wolfman, I never kept up with all the extracurricular stuff of any rock group. I have just always loved their music along with many of the 60s groups.

Englandsf, good point about using drugs. I am certainly going to try not to since I haven't been using anything. But I think having the ambien CR on hand plus a snack will help me relax knowing something is availabe if I need it.

EMS, glad the ambien CR works for you. Interesting theory about when it becomes a placebo. Even though the Beach Boys failed last night,:), I am still taking them to the sleep study.

BTW - you've been on CPAP how long? Why the new study?

My doc said it's for life with annual monitoring of my data basically. Almost 4 months in and hooked...

Good luck

I have never been able to stay asleep on the machine for any consistent amount of time no matter what I do. Since I only had a home study, I figured it was time for a full scale study to make sure there aren't any other issues at play. Finally, found a doctor who was willing to do one believe it or not as previous docs I saw didn't want to do one since I already had a home study.

People who are doing well definitely don't need a repeat study in my opinion. And actually, I feel they don't need to see a sleep doctor.

What a great place to go to a concert at....it was positioned beautifully on top of a hill and caught wonderful breezes on hot summer evenings. Too bad they tore it down....

here is my story for Beach Boys and sleep apnea. This is one of the several reasons I beleive my sleep apnea goes back to when I was 20.

Forth of July 1980, Beach Boys performing on the national mall in washington DC. My fiance and I took a blanket and sat on the lawn, our spot right in front of a 10ft hisg stack of speakers. After the first couple of songs, I lay on the blanket, head in my fiance's lap and went to sleep. Woke up for the encores.

OMG John, I would be so upset if I did that. By the way, I do that currently with various events. That is why I have given up going to movies and have to stand if I go to events like book discussions or I will be out cold.

By the way, I forgot to mention previously, I saw the Beach Boys at the same place I think in 1982 after then Interior Secretary James Watt had said they drew the wrong element. I remember afterward moving with my friend so we could be closer to where the National Symphony Orchestra was playing and jokingly saying we were now part of the "right element" group.

Remake published two weeks ago - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqLTe8h0-jo

It's a bit silly, but still a good tribute.

I have loved Brian Wilson since the sixties. Pet Sounds is the greatest. Still have the vinyl.
