Intermittent popping sound

Post by rickpdx » Thu Oct 23, 2014 11:17 am

I've been using a REMstar Auto A-flex with a full face mask for 6 years. All of a sudden there's an intermittent popping sound when I inhale that keeps me awake. I can't figure out where it's coming from. Tried mask adjustments, can't find leaks anywhere. Ideas?

Hi rick:

A couple of comments.
1) please register and list your equipment. It is likely that your problem is mask specific and will be best answered by a knowledgeable user of your same mask.
2) That having being said, it may be that the anti-asphyxiation valve on your mask is sticking and either should be replaced or carefully cleaned. The exact mask will help in making that determination.

If there is a small amount of water in your hose...it will cause a popping noise. Make sure that your CPAP is lower than your mattress so any water runs down hill back to the humidifier. (Rainout)

I've heard a popping noise using a nasal pillow system, and usually take it as a sign that the pillow is getting old. It is a fluttering pop, and comes and goes. I have a heated hose and hose cover, so rain-out is pretty rare for me. I usually just change out the pillow (mask) and the noise goes away.

Some F/P Flexifit FF masks do that when the AA valve gets hung up due to a cough or sneeze.
Look in the elbow if it is one of these masks.

This is my thought, too. Too high of a humidity setting or not keeping the hose warm enough will cause the water vapor to condense (back into liquid) in a low spot in the hose.
