High HI second sleep session

Post by rbrown3rd » Tue Oct 21, 2014 6:52 am

I use an S8 Elite with an Airfit P10 mask. I recently added a Ruby adjustable chin strap to my gear and have been getting excellent results. My AHI is typically less than 1 and often less than .5. But, after waking to use the bathroom around 4 am and going back to sleep my second session AHI is typically much higher. It is usually 3 - 4. The breakdown usually shows that the higher number is composed mostly of a higher HI with the mask leakage and AI numbers roughly the same as the first part of the night. So when I go back to sleep for the second part of the night my HI number goes up. Any thoughts?

Less than 5 is fantastic though, if you're not feeling anything negative I wouldn't be concerned with this

You don't say what time you wake up nor what time you went to bed but let's say you go to bed at 11 - 11 to 4 is 5hrs. and wake up at 7 - 4 to 7 is 3 hrs.

If you have the same # of event in 5 hrs you have in 3 hrs and we use math to figure the HI which one will have the higher index?
Does your machine break it down that way? Two separate HI's?

I'd say less than 5 is adequate, myself.

The S8 machines always tended to overstate HIs. When you look at your AI total reduce the HI by 50%.

I think that sometimes higher AHI numbers during short sessions are from some awake/semi awake breathing irregularities getting flagged by the machine by mistake...similar to the way naps often report higher AHI.

I know often when I have that second sleep session close to when I would be normally waking up I tend to sometimes wake up sort of...and go back to sleep and wake up sort of and go back to sleep and our awake/semi awake breathing can fool the machine sometimes into thinking something is going on that really isn't going on.

I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it though unless it was something that happened frequently. Not much we can do about it anyway.

Yes, my machine breaks it down into two separate HI's.

I think you are right about it being indicative of the nature of my second sleep session. I was not so much worried about it as curious. I think your summary is a very probably explanation. I'm quite happy with the results I am getting since adding the chinstrap to my cpap gear. The last two nights my AHI numbers have been less than 1.
