FFM for me?

Post by darco » Tue Oct 21, 2014 1:37 pm

Ok, so I thought getting the Airfit P10 was going to my leak savior but unfortunately it is not...I know Ill get feedback saying my leaks arent bad but something is disturbing my sleep as everyday I wake up tired.
Last nite I again tried taping my mouth shut just to see and my leaks are still the same. I really cant say what position I sleep in because its all of them... Most nites I do not consciously wake up adjusting my gear but I know I did w/my previous nasal pillow. No bathroom wakeups, no outside disturbances.. I have also played w/my pressure going from 10cmi to 12 (3weeks now). Adjusted straps numerous times.....
I envy those users who post their leak screenshots , those flatlines are amazing.
So Im thinking possibly a FFM just to test out? I know CPAP.com has a 30 day return policy? What do you all think?

Absolutely! Try a FFM, or two or three and compare. Different face profiles fit some masks better. Take control of your therapy!
Also, try the PadaCheek or RemZzzs mask liners. They made a big leak difference for me.

You are right...someone is going to tell you that those leaks aren't bad but hey...even though they aren't huge leaks maybe they are disrupting your sleep so by all means...try a full face mask to see if it makes any difference in how you sleep and/or feel.

Do make use of the cpap.com mask return insurance though...for sure.
You can check out the cost of the insurance by clicking on the "customize and buy" button...with some masks it's free and with others it costs $$ that you don't get back..the refunded amount is just the mask purchase price (though they will send you a prepaid shipping label).
If it were me I would start with the lates Resmed full face mask because the return insurance is free but up to you as to which one looks interesting to you.
This one has free return insurance. I don't know about the others in the full face category. Some of the insurance is pretty costly...I suspect because they get more of those returned.

Well, since I am not a mouth breather, its really finding a mask that will hold up while I switch positions. I have tried nasal mask (wisp,Zest) as well and they were ok but the pain between my nostrils was overwhelming.
I am not even sure the FFM mask will hold up either but I guess its my only choice at this point?

You know I am just here to help you no matter what you decide...and if you want to try full face mask...I make a suggestion that might work and won't cost you much money.

You didn't ask about maybe trying other nasal pillow masks...but if you had...then I would try to help there.

My personal thoughts about full face masks...I don't see how having more "stuff" to deal with is going to make the sleep any better but hey...that's just my personal thoughts.
I think that when people "what if" that they should be able to at least try whatever it is that they are "what iffing" about.
Otherwise they will always wonder "what if it would get me to where I want to be".

I have tried lots of masks just because I like to try new stuff or compare stuff. Full face masks are NOT something that is high on my list but I have on occasion put one on to see how it felt as long as it didn't cost me any money. I actually slept with one once...disaster but I kept it on all night.
I always learn something...even if the only thing I learn is "I hate this frigging thing"...I have still learned something and I sure don't have to what if about it anymore....and I have hated some nasal pillow masks too..and some nasal cushion masks.

If the P10 is leaking and moving around a bit and maybe causing some leaks that might disturb sleep...I would also suggest that you think about a different nasal pillow if you haven't tried a different model yet. The P10 is a great little mask but it does sometimes slide around a bit on me. It's still okay because I would still rather have less on my face then one of the others but you might need stability more than "less on your face". There's pros and cons to every mask out there and my advantage could be someone else's disadvantage.

Hey thanks Pugsy..Ya I dont want more "stuff" either to worry about. I am going to play w/the straps and see if I can tighten it a bit w/a rubber band. Maybe that will help..

I have to wash my P10 headgear in really, really hot water every now and then as it tends to get a bit loose on me.
I would never have thought that would be needed as tight as it was when brand new but it does seem to stretch out a bit with time.
But then I don't coddle it when putting on or removing it either...it gets stretched out with both steps.

Also I think its time to try new pillows..been using the original first one since mid Jan and it seems to be getting a bit more "leaky" and annoying like it isn't quite "firm" enough. Hard to describe but I am going to put a new one on today and see how it goes tonight. I have been having some pretty ugly leaks lately and it doesn't look like mouth breathing...looks like the mask is sliding all over the place....and I have had a few wake ups lately with the pillows feeling "weird".
Hard to describe except just doesn't feel "right".

Just some feedback on the P10 nasal pillows. This is now my favorite mask but I agree with Pugsy ( well, yes, I know, who wouldn't agree with whatever she has to say) that the straps need to be washed with hot water to get them back into a good holding strength. I put them into my washer. But also, I find that I need to change the pillows about every 3 or so weeks as I start to get leaks. Even washing in hot water etc doesn't seem to do it for me. I sleep in all positions, both sides, back and stomach and these pillows really do the best for me in all positions! I love being able to sleep on my stomach again, with my favorite down pillow!

My personal opinion is that the bigger the surface area the mask has to cover, the more likely it is to leak. So I'll second the suggestion of trying to either replace your nasal pillows as they may be wearing out OR try a different nasal pillow mask.

Medicare covers two sets of nasal pillows a month, so they expect them to wear out quickly. The trouble is that it's a lot of paperwork for the DME to get you new nasal pillows, so sometimes they don't like to bother.

If you want to try another nasal pillow mask, I would suggest the Swift LT because it has a 'frame' structure that might hold up to some movement during sleep. Now this might or might not work for you, its just a suggestion. I used the LT for quite a while before graduating to the P10 & I liked the frame of the LT.

If you move a lot in your sleep any mask will have its good points & bad, so what worked for me may not work for you, but I just thought it might be worth suggesting.

Two suggestions -
1 -if you're not using the largest pillows try them, you might be surprised how well they seal.
2 - check the edges of the pillows, they often show tiny little ragged edges before they start to leak/fail...

Good luck
