Home Study or PSG?

Post by jdip » Tue Oct 21, 2014 1:38 pm

Hi all,

I've been wanting to go for a sleep study (extreme fatigue all day every day for as long as I can remember, even though I get plenty of sleep) and am not sure whether to go for the Home Test ($500) or do the full PSG.

I've done some reading online and saw that the Home Test is useful for diagnosing sleep apnea but not any other sleep disorders. Would you recommend doing the Home Test? $1500 for the PSG is a bit steep, but might be worth it if I can get reasons why I always feel so tired, but if the Home Test can diagnose sleep apnea just as well I'd rather save the $1000...

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could offer me some advice. My quality of life is very miserable right now because of the chronic fatigue. Thanks and have a nice day.

There are different levels of data collected by different sleep studies done in the home.
There's the most basic O2 (pulse ox on a finger) measuring home sleep study...up to sleep studies that have EEG electrodes and leg sensors and thoracic belts....and anywhere in between.
For plain jane vanilla OSA with no other factors...an in home study can get the job done.
I would want the "higher channel of data gathered home study" if it were me though. Not just the basic O2 sleep study.

Now I am NOT trying to sell this guy's sleep studies...but he does offer a really good explanation as to what all is involved with the various "levels/channels" of data with each study...the more channels..the higher the price.

So for educational purposes take a stroll through his website and what is out there..then you and your insurance (if you have any) can decide what works or doesn't work for you.

This option is not for everyone .... but for me if I was paying out of pocket ...
For less than $500 you can get a used auto-adjusting cpap and a recording pulse ox on a finger and do your own sleep test ( with some help from people here) if you don't need it you can sell the cpap and o2 meter again and not be out anything

Another option

If you are in the SF bay area they will pay you for your time :

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!
