Wake me up before I go-go (back to sleep, that is)

Post by cvought1 » Sun Oct 19, 2014 9:42 pm

CPAP community,

I am faced with a critical issue but I know there must be a solution because I can't be the first person to face this issue. I am making the mistake of falling asleep without my machine on! You all know what it is like; it only takes a split second when you are tired to doze off accidentally. Then, to wake up at 6am, having to use the restroom and your entire throat dry and aching because you fell asleep again without your machine and you swear it's gonna be a tough day because of it. I know you all have faced this scenario. What I am looking for is an app for my iPhone that will call/alert me when I have failed to "check-in" that I have my machine on my face and I'm tucked into bed. It's not as though I don't have the discipline to make certain I wear my machine every night.....but there are those nights when I accidentally fall asleep and then fall behind on my critical sleep.

I want an app with that specific functionality.....whereas if I fail to "let it know" that I've put on my mask and have prepared myself for sleep for it to wake me at like 2 or 2:30am (which will enable me enough time to get my mask on and get enough therapy. I know....I know, I could just set an alarm for that time.....but I think you can imagine that interrupting some REM sleep with that tactic would be just as damaging. I think you know what I am getting at. Let me know your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks,
charles

Set a repeating alarm on your phone for 1 hour after your normal bed time, and turn the alarm off when you have your mask on.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

I agree ; I think at this time setting the alarms and not turning them off until your mask is on is the way to go. Maybe someday there will be a more specific apt for this - maybe you could write it! - but until then ...

It will get easier, Esp as you get less tired! do you have a partner who can help with this?

You will figure this out!.

Thank you very much for the quick replies! It's greatly appreciated. I will move forward with the repeating alarm idea for now, however, I am always on the lookout for an app that will achieve what I am looking for. I really think this functionality could be duplicated with ifttt.com's utilities but I can't quite make it work out because the way it works is Re-active (some trigger has to happen) rather than responding to what FAILS happen and then acting (pro-active). Yes, I am already working on that app -heck, I want to become an iOS developer just so somebody can create it.

You already have the app, it's just not formatted for your phone, it's called a brain. I turn on my O2 compressor, walk to the bedroom, sit on bed, put on mask, while setting on bed, push the start button on my XPAP, lie down, pull up covers. The whole operation takes less than one minute. If you fall asleep faster than that you need a 24/7 keeper.

Speaking of that you could also get the app, WIFE 1, it can work in two ways, one it can oversee that you get your mask on before you pass out, or mode 2, it can nag you until you get it on.

The problem, WIFE 1, is costly, and requires daily maintenance. Jim

Seems there's an app for just about everything so who knows what may be coming down the pike. I would want it to wake me quickly so as to avoid sleeping without treatment. A few hours is too long for my needs. If putting my mask on were still a problem for me I'd set an alarm for shortly after my bedtime every night, and turn it off nightly after my mask was on. I am fortunate that I don't read or watch TV in bed, so the likelihood of me falling asleep accidentally is minimal. Early in my treatment my sleep was often instantaneous. Decided to stay sitting till my mask was on. Didn't work. Several times woke up hours later still sitting upright on the edge of the bed without the mask. Had to resort to masking up while still standing to be sure. Sure glad that phase passed. My internal alarm is enough for me these days. Not a clock - it's the fear factor. Had some pretty scary episodes before treatment.

Goofproof is right - you need a routine not an app. I put on my mask, turn on the machine and then roll into bed every night, wherever I am. Makes it impossible to go to sleep with no mask.

If you are using an iPhone, I believe you can do what you are describing with the built-in Reminders App. Let's say you set a daily reminder for 11 pm to put on your mask. Then, tomorrow, you remember to put on your mask at 10:30. If you go into the app at 10:30 and click the circle on the reminder (i.e. mark it done) then it will reset itself to remind you again at 11 the following day. So, you don't get woken up at 11 if you checked it off at 10:30, but you do get an alarm at 11 if you haven't checked it off yet.

Hi All,

My friend and I have been experimenting with programming for Android quite a bit lately and are always looking for something to work on. This is an idea I really don't want to pass up, as I could benefit from it myself. When bedding down for the night I'm not always tired (especially after using CPAP for some time), so I constantly think to myself lying there "I just need to close my eyes and get a little closer to sleep before I put the mask on..." and we all know how that turns out...

Anyways, I wanted to put my feelers out and bump this thread to see what other potential features might be useful to anyone and everyone interested in using an app like the one in the OP. Oh, and if you're an iPhone kind of person don't worry! We will be developing on that platform as well once the Android version is polished.

I understand that a routine is what someone on CPAP therapy needs, but I feel this could help reinforce that routine... especially in newer patients. Some folks like myself, have a difficult time adjusting to the therapy, why not use every tool available to help them through it?

Thanks in Advance!
JL

What I REALLY need is an app that would run on my cpap machine -- it would know that it's time X, and that I'm not on it, and it would send me a text message.

My machine actually has all of the requisite hardware to do it, too -- cell phone is built right in.

...of course it wouldn't have helped with what I did a few nights ago, where I pulled the hose off of my mask, turned the A10 off, and went back to sleep -- with the freaking mask on!

As a newbie, I can see already that the biggest obstacle to success here is being smart enough to run the equipment while asleep!

well, stop that idiosy.

I *NEVER* do anything that stupid, ergo, I don't go to sleep without the mask.

No app is necessary. A matter of routine.

When I go to bed, it is a process, a procedure. I do the same thing every time, automatic.

Before I lie down, I make sure the humidifier is full, make sure the SDcard is in the machine, turn off the lights, make my electronic diary entry (I am recording a bunch of things right now) saying I'm going to sleep with whatever comments to make, take off my glasses, put on the mask and lie down and go to sleep. I'm typically out in 5 mins or less.

If I wake up for whatever reason where I can't sleep, mask comes off, I sit up, put my glasses on and get out of bed.... when I am ready, I do the same thing all over again getting ready to sleep.

I never lie down without my mask on. I only lie in bed when I am going to sleep or take a nap.

oh, I make plenty of mistakes, for example, for a while, I thought you had something worthwhile to contribute.... but then I found out I was mistaken, you mostly just play nanny and try to control people.

but one mistake I don't make that's very easy to avoid, is laying down and thinking 'well, I'll just close my eyes and wait till I'm good and sleepy before I bother to put on my mask...'

I bet you don't make that mistake either... or, am I wrong about that
