OT What is the most accurate home BP device

Post by Day_Dreamer » Wed Oct 01, 2014 8:00 am

Hi

I am getting different readings from my blood pressure measurers. Looking to find the most accurate digital BP device. I recall a visit to my sleep doc and they used a digital meter. I commented as I have only had it taken at a physician via the mercury based ones that require a stethoscope. I did not get the brand name

Thanks in advance!

I would be interested in the answer also. Over the years I have purchased 2 different monitors and both are not accurate. For some reason the newest digital monitor records low.

I use and several other family members use the Panasonic EW3109W Blood Pressure Monitor. I took mine in for one of my Cardiologists visits and it was pretty much dead on.

It is an upper arm monitor cuff with auto inflate and keeps a record of readings.

Hi - just a reminder, your BP will change over the day and each day individually. Obviously if you have very large differences consistently, then you want to be sure equipment's good, but small changes e.g. am to pm, etc., are not necessarily something to worry about.

I agree with Julie....You could take your BP and get a different reading 2 minutes later. Also left arm/right arm may be different and also standing/sitting will be different. Unless there is a very big difference, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks

I actually have this one
While I have never tried it at the Doctors office, I find this model is always higher than my others but it is more consistent with the readings I get at the Doctor's. But, it is still lower than the readings I get at the Doctor's. Might just be white coat syndrome ....

If you get significant difference between arms at about the same time, it's time to see your doctor as it may indicate a cardiac problem.
Every year or so, ask your doctor to do the pressure readings in both arms so nothing sneaks up on you.

The most important thing to consider is whether the unit you want to buy as been validated by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the British Hypertension Society and the International Protocol for the Validation of Automated BP Measuring Devices. A list of validated monitors is available at http://www.dableducational.org/sphygmom ... l#ArmTable. Note that not all models of certain brand have been validated.

The second most important thing is to have the correct size cuff for the circumference of your arm. If you arm is more than 13" around, then you need a LARGE cuff.

After much study, I bought the OMRON BP760N from AMAZON. The cuff that comes with it works for both small and large arms. It stores up to 100 measurements for two people.

Last, be sure you measure you blood pressure correctly. The cuff is aligned properly on your arm. You should be sitting and your arm should be at your heart level. And always measure in the same arm--usually left.

Lots of information using Google.

Personally, we've been using a couple of the Omron brand machines for about 10 years. Bought a HEM-711 in early 2005 and the latest was a BP760 within the last couple of years. Bought both at the local Walmart and the prices were reasonable and affordable.

Most folks prefer digital, and that's fine.

I prefer a stethoscope and an aneroid sphygmomanometer as I can hear the systolic and diastolic values at feint levels.

I too prefer this type of blood pressure reading, but sadly as I have gotten older, my hearing has gotten worse. I can no longer hear those faint sounds thru the stethoscope.

I found it impossible for me to use a stethoscope on myself so I went with the digitals like Den did. I like the ones that pump themselves up.

Then I took mine in to my Primary doc.

That showed both of us it was close to what his fancy gizmo was doing.

Keep in mind if you place the cuff on wrong you will not get accurate readings. Also keep in mind that your BP is designed to vary, instantly, thruout the day. Find a place to rest your arm at heart level while the BP is being read and do it in the same place if you are going to get critical. Time of day can make a diff.

You can also sit undisturbed for a minute or two if you want; feet flat on the floor and focus on your breathing before you begin.

Many of the new ones have memory and track your avg. I made a chart in Word to pencil in my results that way I can show my doc when I go in he can see for himself what is going on.

Often it is the walk from the parking lot into the docs office will elevate your BP. Arrive early so you can get a rest before the nurse or aid can get to you.

There was a post on here a few yrs back that mentioned emptying your bladder before taking your BP.

And be aware of how many medical professionals constantly take blood pressure incorrectly and don't realize the arm needs to be resting a heart level. During a recent doctor visit, the nurse took it with my arm dangling. I didn't feel like arguing with her since I had taken a recent reading and knew it was fine.

Anyway, it turned out to be 135/85 and since I had just walked to the facility about 10 minutes ago from my apartment, which was a 10 minute walk, I wasn't worried. The nurse was and acted like I was going to have a stroke.

I am also finding that the same brand and model number could be give completely different results
