Have no idea what is going on but you can maybe check with these folks at acbio to see what they say.
Sounds like a sensor failed if it is just the auto on/off thing. You might try turning that feature off and just be happy with pushing the button to start and stop it....if that works. If it will still start and stop manually there's no critical need to have it start and stop automatically.

If it is the old M Series Respironics machine though (that's what this thread is about) it's going to cost more to fix it than it's worth.

In the setup configuration, there's an option for "Auto Off".......is it set to On or Off?
There's also a "Mask alert" option in the setup. Is it set to On or Off?
Does it work to push the On/Off button?
What mask are you using?
You also have to consider that the machine is quite a few years old and some things may stop working or wear out.
Make sure you have at least one backup machine.
