2 week CPAP, same sleep issues

Post by dadof2 » Wed Oct 01, 2014 3:58 am

I have had sleeping issues for about 4-5 years. It started mild and continued to get worse. My issue is that I wake up at night and then I am wide awake for 2-3 hours before I can go back to sleep. I had a sleep study conducted and they said that I had mild sleep apnea but my CPAP machine needed to be on a high pressure (17) to be able to help it.

I have been using my machine for 2 weeks and while I am still trying to get use to the machine, I have found that I do wake up with a little more bounce in my step. The issue I have had for the last few nights is that my sleeping issues have come back. I am still waking up and can't go back to sleep. Anyone have any suggestions to help me? I can't really pinpoint what wakes me up (not the bathroom). Perhaps discomfort from the mask but I am not sure because I was waking up prior to a CPAP as well. I know people I work with say it could be stress, but in my position I get weeks off during different times of the year and the issue persists during that time as well.

I don't really know what my next steps could possibly be from here. Please help

Do you know if your machine is effectively doing what it's supposed to be doing -- controlling your apnea? First step is to tell us the make and exact model of your machine. We need to know if your machine is recording your apnea events and if so, it would be helpful to start looking at some of your treatment data.

If you have a ResMed machine the name of the model (e.g. Elite, Autoset, Escape, Escape Auto, VPAP...) should be right by the Start/Stop button. With a Philips Respironics machine there should be a number either on the side or the underside of the machine that starts with REF or DS (take water out of the machine before you turn it over to look).

There may of course be other factors involved in your sleep disruption but we can sure look at whether your machine is doing its job.

I have a Resmed Escape. My mask is an AIrfit N10. It doesn't appear to have any links that I can tell. With the pressure, there is a constant air flow that comes out of the vents when it gets to full pressure (17) but they said that would be normal. They said to put my fingers around the edges and check for air their and in my eyes which I do not have.

I noticed the memory card in the machine and tried to put it in my computer but all of the files appeared to be files that I did not have a program to open.

You need a card reader to do that - card goes into the reader which is plugged into your computer (USB cable) and then you first set up the program per instructions, and then DL the info and see what comes up.

unfortunately, the escape is a useless dumb box that collects no data

Actually you won't need a card reader to communicate with the SD card if your computer already has a SD Slot.
Card readers are only needed if the computer doesn't have a SD slot.
Software ...ResScan or SleepyHead will work and easy to get. See my signature line for SleepyHead information.
So the software part is easy.
The part that stinks is the Escape doesn't have anything on that SD card except how many hours you have used it.
Won't tell you if therapy is effective...won't tell you if leaks are an issue.

Read this blog especially the part "help I'm stuck with a brick".
http://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/
It's down the page a little.

2 weeks .....not very long...still within a window where you might have some leverage to get the DME to swap it out for a model that will offer you useful data.
Don't wait...the longer you use the brick the less chance of getting it swapped out.

dadof2, I was so hoping you hadn't been dealt a brick. Please do read about data capable machines at the link Pugsy provided, and then do whatever you can to get one. In the ResMed S9 series that would be either the Elite or the Autoset (not Escape Auto).

With the Escape there is no way you or your doctor can evaluate the effectiveness of your therapy because no treatment data is available from your machine. Pressure adjustments are often needed in the early weeks of therapy (which could very well be your situation based on your description), but without data to guide the adjustments you're flying blind.

If you're only a couple of weeks into this, you need to twist some arms and get a fully-data-capable machine ASAP.
If they try to tell you that the one you have IS data capable, you should ask them to download the data and SHOW YOU all of it, not just the hours of use (which is all it records).

Bottom line is that they've put their profits above your therapy.
In that regard, they're scumbags and don't deserve any trust.
The insurance code E0601 is exactly the same for any CPAP machine.
If your insurance is paying for it, they don't care what machine it is as long as the code is E0601.
Don't let them get away with this. If they're trying to do it to you, there are others they've done it to.
