Quick Question-Is a PRS-1 Auto capable of BiPap?

Post by Suenyo » Tue Sep 23, 2014 8:10 am

Went back through 41 days of data this morning and found two days that say BiPap and both charts have big chunks of sleep data with NO events! I don't know how I managed to set the machine to Bi-PAP, but I would like to find out how you set the Epap to 7 and the IPAP to, maybe - 12. Those two days the Pressure range was 15 (5-20) just like in Apap, but in 39 days of APAP I have tons of events at all pressures without any clear gaps. The last two or three nights I tried CPAP at 8cm and I get chunks of time with no events, but none as clear and long as those two accidental nights on Bi-PAP.

How did I do that?

The model 560 doesn't have a bipap mode.
I bet you are using SleepyHead software and taking the "bipap" thing from the statistics page. That's a little bug in the statistics page that can't tell exactly which mode of operation is going on.
Just a coincidence that you didn't have any events those nights. The machine can't be set to bipap mode with 2 pressures. Simply not available.

If your reports are looking better now with the increase in the minimum pressure from 5 to 8....probably because the higher minimum is doing a better job holding the airway open.

Sleeping position may also be a factor. If you sleep more times on your back than at other times. Often when sleeping on our backs the OSA is made worse and/or maybe needs more pressure than at other times
Also maybe REM stage sleep. OSA is often worse in REM stage sleep and some nights a person may get more REM than other nights.

Oh shoot! I was hoping for a break-through. I'm so tired of being tired! Thanks anyway Pugsy.

As to REM; How can I tell if I was in REM sleep? My guess is I'm not getting any.

REM sleep stages are fairly predictable in most people unless they are waking up a huge number of times to keep bouncing them out of normal sleep cycles.

Normally the first REM stage comes around about 90 minutes after sleep onset and as the night progresses we get REM stages more frequently and they last longer.
See the hypnogram here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep

People often think they aren't getting into REM sleep because they don't remember dreaming but that really is a good indicator of lack of REM sleep. First of all we can dream in any sleep stage and not just REM sleep but of course REM stage is common.
Secondly we don't always remember our dreams so that in itself doesn't mean we didn't reach REM

Without using an EEG, you can't specifically determine that. You might recall that you had some dreams, but you can dream outside of the REM stage.
