newly diagnosed

Post by mahaa » Mon Sep 22, 2014 8:13 pm

Hello everyone. I recently have been diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. When I received the results of my sleep study I had 4 sleep apnea episodes. 156 episodes of shallow breathing. And one central. During my sleep study I didn't sleep well due to hotflashes(menopause) I was still recovering from surgery for uterine cancer(I'm in remission) it's been health issue after health issue this year. Sorry if I am rambling. So the central sleep apnea incident was only one however I wonder if I wouldn't have woke up so many times to throw the blankets off because I was hot and then throw them back on because I was cold if I would have had more central incidents? I am concerned about having mixed sleep apnea and not knowing because of not sleeping well that night. Secondly my oxygen levels dropped to 76% during my deepest sleep. So I have these oxygen tanks and machines that I received after my surgery when they couldn't understand why my oxygen levels were dropping at night in the hospital. My lung Dr doesn't want me to send them back yet even though he doesn't want me to use them. Not understanding that because I received the cpap machine 4 days ago. It's a Phillips with humidifier. I have the newest nasal pillow mask. Problem: I keep taking it off in my sleep.. I did the same thing with my oxygen. I couldn't figure out how the tube was winding up on the floor when I went to sleep with it in my nose until my daughter told me that she seen me one night take it out during my sleep and throw it on the floor. She said she told me and that I even answered her. I don't remember doing it or answering her lol. So how am I going to be compliant if I'm doing this in my sleep???,and why do you think my Dr doesn't want to send the oxygen back yet even though he told me not to use it? Thank you in advance

Hi mahaa - welcome to the forum. You've come to a good place for help and support from many well-traveled users! I am very new to cpap therapy myself, and have learned SO much by reading posts, and talking with others. It is normal to have LOTS of questions when starting out with PAP therapy, but since I am still so new to this, I will let most of your questions be answered by others who have the expertise and know how to explain things best to you.

From what I've read, it is very common for new users in particular, to take their masks off while sleeping and not necessarily remember doing it, so try not to feel bad about it Some users may suggest using a chin strap or other solutions, but something that helped me get used to the mask initially was to wear it while watching TV, before I tried to sleep with it. It takes time to get used to sleeping with something on your face.

The only thing I can think of as to why your doc wants you to keep the oxygen is because he/ she may think you might need that also, along with the cpap. I think I read there is a way for a user to hook up oxygen to cpap tubing so they are getting both treatments, if needed.

Again - welcome
