Help! Sleepless in Singapore
Help! Sleepless in Singapore
Hello all! I need help please! I am traveling in Singapore and my hose has a huge hole in it which I have tried to fix with electrical and duct tape but I really need a new hose. Does anyone out there have any idea where I can get get one? I am calling hospitals and sleep clinics, as well as pharmacies for advice, and expect to find a source through them (it's Sunday here so many non-emergency services are closed). CPAP.com can't guarantee shipment quickly, nor can other websites I have found. But if anyone can offer any guidance, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!! Thanks so much.

Try craigslist - someone was able to buy second hand unit recently. Also Respironics should have local Singapore office, check website.
and try them:

Have you looked in whatever the equivalent of a phonebook is there, under medical equipment, or something?

Okay this may sound stupid, but hey you can never tell until you try something.
I know you said you tried tape, both electric and duct and neither worked. Did you use some type of barrier first. I would try putting a piece of plastic over the hole, say a section of freezer bag or other thin plastic then tape over that. The tape would have to be really tight to seal it but if you haven't tried a barrier before attaching the tape, try it. You already have the tape and so this fix should really cost you anything if you can find the piece of plastic to use as a shield. Otherwise I could see where the tape might leak around the edges of the tape.

For a quick repair I would try wrapping some saran wrap or quivalent type wrap, 2 or 3 inches either side of the hole. Make sure you have a few times around the hose. Then wrap around each end of of the saran wrap tightly enough that it goes between the ridges of the hose. Then wrap around between the ends. That should hold it long enough for you to find a replacement.

Try a narrow strip of Saran wrap. Wonderful stuff.
EDIT: Saran Wrap must be a winner. I see I'm not the only one.

Re: Help! Sleepless in Singapore
Thanks all, for your responses. Here's what happened - I brought my Repti-Heater with me (can you see where this is going?) As all my other travel appliances are dual-voltage (including the CPAP machine), I forgot that the simple Repti-heater was NOT dual-voltage. So I plugged it in to an adaptor with no converter, not thinking. It melted the entire length of the hose. So a small fix was not going to help. I called the hotel engineer who brought a roll of duct tape, and we wrapped the entire hose with it. It was better than nothing, but it was not going to work for a 3-week trip. Plus, it made the hose so stiff that every time I moved, it either woke me up or disconnected from the machine, and the smell of the duct tape was like sniffing glue (I didn't read the notes about the Saran Wrap until after the duct tape was firmly stuck to the old hose).
In the meantime I was checking medical equipment companies,, and the Ritz hotel concierge was doing so also, on my behalf. I searched for "Medical Supply Companies Singapore" and other similar key words. I found a company, IB Med, who actually brought a loaner hose to the hotel, which I used for two days until I could get to their office and buy one. So I am a happy hosehead again, and other than the fact that I'm not getting enough sleep on this trip because of long days, all is well!!!
Bottom line is, we are all out there trying to figure things out, and thanks to you all once again, I had some direction and some ideas about how to get what I needed to stay healthy and well. You all are great!!!!!

Re: Help! Sleepless in Singapore
Hello! I was travelling in Singapore last month and got into a similar situation. After doing some research online, I went to a vendor near Mount Elizabeth Hospital of Orchard Road. This vendor is different from the other vendors that I can find online because they are more clinical. They provide advises and consultation on how to use the CPAP machine, the ways to maintain it and more. This vendor also gives me an impression that they are not hard selling their CPAP machines. You can find them by googling sleep easy centre.
Cheers!
