First night = holey freaking batman!!!!

Post by Saya » Fri Sep 19, 2014 11:32 pm

Hey everyone!!!

got my machine yesterday, major flop cuz my son was sick and had to stay awake with him. Could barely use it.

first real night of trying it on was today.... put it on tonight at 10h00, fell asleep around 10h30 and i just woke up (its 2: 30 am right now) . WHHHHAAAATTTT?!!! im like ready to freaking start my day!!!! and its been 4 hours!!!!! I dont ever feel this refreshed with a FULL night sleep in the morning. IM WIDE AWAKE, will try back in a few minutes but WOWWWZER. They weren't kidding when they said I had severe apnea.

i am so soooo impressed. WOW.
i HIGHLY recommend to any newbies reading this to try the watching the tv method. I don't i would of became so accustomed to my machine if it weren't for having it on without feeling like i had to sleep with it right away.

my ONLY complaint, is i have dry throat. Not the mouth per say, weirdly but buttom of my throat, and i dont feell its because i open my mouth, because i could feel it when i was awake watching tv. So il have to figure that one out but. all in all, 3 hours into it, and i am completly speechless...in a good way

thanks for listening

About how I felt after the 2nd part of my first sleep study when I slept more than 4 hours with a mask during the titration part of the study. Wow! I gotta get me one of these... Been 8yrs now.

Good to hear it worked out of the box for you. Just know there can be bumps in the road, but sounds like you did well the first time.

That happened my first night to. I actually jumped out of bed and then looked at the clock confused. It sure felt like morning. It takes a little while, but then your brain realizes it is actually allowed to have 7 or 8 hours of quality sleep. It doesn't have to settle for 4 hours worth of sleep spread out over 8 hours

Welcome to cpap. It sure is nice to have a good noticeable change. It will help you when you have a bad night as you will crave those better nights and want to repeat them.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

You might try raising the level of humification that you're using (assuming that your cpap has a humidifier) and see if that helps the dry throat.

Sound great, though. Congratulations. As others have said, as time goes on you'll be sleeping longer using the cpap, your body will get used to it.

Can you confirm which model number of machine that you have?
You have chosen the model 550 in the PR system one line and you may have the model 560. The model number is on the bottom of the blower unit.
If you have a 560 machine and the humidifier that goes with it you may have additional options in terms of humidity delivery that might be of benefit to you.
The 550 model was replaced by the 560 model a couple of years ago. While not impossible for you to have a 550 if you got your machine from a DME store it would be unusual that they would have supplied a 550.

Does your hose have a black end where it attaches to the humidifier?
What setting are you using on the humidifier.

I got my machine at a Sleep Studic clinic, They do the home studies and sell the machines as well. it doesnt say either 550 0r 560. but it does say 561CA but im in Canada so maybe its different. It does have a black end where it attaches to the humidifier. so there is a humidifier on mine, I was told to put my humidity on level 2, i hiked it up last night to 5 and it just got warmish, i turned it back to 3. it helped a bit but not a ton. but heck il deal with dry throat over feeling so tired. lol.

I have an apt on wednesday for adjustments, il ask her. At this clinic once you get your machine, you get an apt every week for a month, then once every 6 months and then every year. (or sooner if need be).

Three weeks in. I have found that Bioteen spray help with the dry throat somewhat, but did also add a room humidifier in order to have moist air, that wasn't warm. I need more moisture than some people. Some nights I still have dry throat, some nights I have none. I think it gets better with time as my body adapts to treatment.

You have a model 560/561 (the one is just code for Canada and 0 for US)...
So your correct choice for your equipment in your profile would be this

Machine...PR System One 60 Series Auto CPAP
Humidifier...PR System One 60 Series Heated tube humidifier with heated tube

Be sure to click "submit" for the changes to stick.

Since you have the black end on the hose you already have a heated hose...and with the heated hose plugged in the only change available just by turning the knob (from 1 to 5) is for heating the air in the hose....it doesn't change the humidity level.
You have to go into the clinical setup menu area to change the humidity level.
That's why increasing from 2 to 5 just felt warmish...that's all that setting does.

You have to go into the clinical setup menu area to change the humidity delivered. I don't remember what the factory default is but it may be 2 or 1...there are 3 choices...1 through 3 with 3 being the highest.
Read about it here
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-sys ... ifier.html
"This humidifier offers three levels of humidification (70, 80 or 90 percent) and the heated tube has five levels of temperature available, ranging from 4 to 16 degrees above the room temperature."

How to get to the clinical setup menu is explained here and there's a little video to help show it
http://www.apneaboard.com/pr-system-one ... structions

I will send you a private message in just a little bit with a link to the provider/clinical manual for your machine...lots of good information in there.

Once you determine what the humidity level actually is set at then you can decide what you want to try to help with the dry throat.

You could try my solution to the dry mouth; get a big mug/cup with cover and straw, fill it half full of water and set it on a small stool about 3-4 feet from the bed. You don't want to have a middle of the spill while it's on your nightstand with the machine! If you wake up with what I call cottonmouth, you can get up for a drink of water. You don't want to take in lots of water when you do that, or it may necessitate a trip to the loo later in the night. A small swig, swish it around in your mouth, then swallow. Then in the morning, you have water right at hand and you can swallow it all up if you want.

I did this regularly for several months. Now, 7 months in, I find I rarely need water in the middle of the night, and usually keep the mug on the kitchen counter where I can take a sip if I need it when I take a trip to the loo. I don't know if I've simply become so used to the dry mouth that it doesn't bother me as much, or if I've learned to keep my mouth closed... maybe it's a little of both. As the saying goes: "and this too shall pass".

I keep a "nipple top" water bottle by my sleeping position. It's easy to grab it, take a sip, and put it back without a lot of risk of spills.

I also keep something like cheerios or crackers within reach. If I end up with gook in the throat, swallowing something solid seems to help clear things out.

Yet another advantage of a nasal mask.
