Software question and melatonin

Post by Tango » Thu Sep 18, 2014 10:48 am

First, I have a question about the use of melatonin . Has anyone seen a difference in their AHI when they take it vs don't take it. I didn't take mine last night and my AHI was 5 something. The two nights previous I had a 3 and 3.8.
Second, confused on what to do. Sleepyhead or rescan or something else? I want to see what is causing my ahi numbers. I guess it could be a few different type of obstructions?
I have the airsense Autoset.
Are there different attitudes towards these two products or are they the same but just different.
Sounds like a flashback to my days traveling in s.e.asia. (Same same but different).....

use of melatonin
You left out the most important information - dosage. What dosage are you taking and at what time relative to bedtime?

And how old are you?

47. I take 3 mg of plant based melatonin about 30 minutes before bed.

Technology is not my best friend. But it can be done. Maybe my new machines data can help build the next software upgrade?

I take Melatonin too, (one a night) but I thought high doses such as 2 or 3 mg is not good, and that the smaller mcg, like 200 mcg or 300 mcg are better to take? I am 63 years old.

Melatonin is a hormone, designed to help you sleep more easily, especially if you have insomnia, but it's not specific to people with apnea and not designed to lower AHI or anything else. Of course if you do sleep better when taking it, hopefully your numbers will look better, but it's not a guarantee.

You are going to have to use ResScan for the time being because Mark hasn't got everything fixed to make SleepyHead compatible with the new AirSense machines.
When SleepyHead is compatible with these new machines you can try it to see how you like it. There's no reason you can't use either or both once that happens but for now you don't have any choice.

1. At the age of 47, it is likely that your body is still producing enough melatonin. If it is, melatonin supplementation could be counterproductive.

2. 3 mg dosage is way too high. This is correct -

If you are getting an AHI of 5, that is 35 to 40 awakenings per night. This is enough to make anyone tired and sleepy the next day.

I suggest you go ahead with your plans to use the software. Then get your CPAP therapy optimized. Then you may sleep well without melatonin.

Don't forget good diet, regular moderate exercise and good sleep hygiene practices.
