CPAP and preppers?
CPAP and preppers?
I recently came across a Nat Geo show called Doomsday Preppers. I`m fascinated by the concerns, the creativity, and the obsessions of the preppers. One of the people profiled had diabetes as nd she had to make special preps for her disease. So I've been thinking about how a CPAP user would prep for a doomsday? What would need to be done to sustain CPAP for months?
All I've done in preparation for disaster is the 3 day supply of food and water.

I guess it all depends on what one's meaning of "Doomsday" is. Never hurts to be somewhat prepared for natural disasters or lengthy periods of survival without the conveniences we're used to. But, to me, "Doomsday" is more like "bend over and kiss your "Asstorisk" goodbye. Kind of hard to prepare for that and if you do survive, what's going to be left to be worth living for?

At 3 am, in full body armor with assault weapons, a more likely scenario, than zombies. I hope they come before 4 am, my bed time. Could be as easy as having a substantial amount of gasoline stored to run a small generator nightly.
Or as complicated as solar charging systems supplying battery banks with wind turbines as backup.
It's only limited by your imagination and your wallet.

Being a Nozzelnut, you should be aware of the fire problems of storing gasoline. Also the fact that gasoline gums and degrades over time, both in storage and in machinery, fuel oil also goes bad, bacteria lives in it and clogs equiptment.Nozzelnut wrote:Could be as easy as having a substantial amount of gasoline stored to run a small generator nightly.

Propane and natural compressed gas can be stored and used, if you have room for a small A bomb explosion in the area.
I'm checking for a used nuclear sub to bury in the back yard, for power and living. I can also have always wanted to nuke some zombies. Jim

Seriously, what are the options to sustain CPAP in as disaster situation?

Re: CPAP and preppers?
Apart from the hazards of storing gasoline, the modern "anti polluting" gasoline breaks down rapidly and can't be stored for very long. You can add Sta-bil or other things to help a bit.
The next problem is whether your generator is going to work when you need it. Think how many problems you have with small engines when you don't use them regularly and maintain them. Running the unit at night can cause problems with the neighbors. A generator and battery solution is better in some ways. Run the generator long enough to charge the batteries each day. Charge the batteries if you have short periods of power available.
Solar panels and batteries large enough to hold a charge long enough to get through cloudy periods are probably one of the better options, but they need maintenance as well.
Professional natgas or diesel generators have some advantages, but take money and can still have their own problems.

Re: CPAP and preppers?
Probably somewhere between "slim" and "none". Unless you have some of the possibilities of having all the stuff you need (generators, safe gas storage and all that), it's going to be tough to do.eeckel wrote:Seriously, what are the options to sustain CPAP in as disaster situation?

Re: CPAP and preppers?
With no utilities in a survival scenario, Xpap will be the last thing on the list, heat, food, security are at the top of the list. If you have anything worthwhile others will come to take it from you.
Solar and batteries, are a good option, but they are visible, you are a target. Natural gas will quit, without the interstructure to matain its flow, it's iffy.
In Nam, my truck ran on a 6 cyl multi-fuel diesel, that type of engine and a generator, could run your needs plus charge a bank of deep cycle batteries. The noise will attract unwanted guests.
Face facts, most of us are infirm, don't have the means to set up a long term basecamp, we are toast. Natural selection is going to mow us down quickly.
Prepping for most of us is a pipe dream, our houses aren't defenseable, we hzve gotten too old and soft to survive without our systems.
No Facebook: Life isn't worth it anymore! Take me Lord!
My mind and life training could get me thru it, but my body won't. I do have the ability to remove some low lifes in the process, maybe that can help others survive and rebuild.
In the scheme of things, what happens will be, all we can do is not to march into the gas ovens willingly. Jim
P.S. If you plan on using salvaged gas or fuel oil. You will need provisions to reclaim it, filters to clean it, real shammies to remove water. In the long term learning about how things were done in the past, steam tech, farming, using animals to help run machines,

Re: CPAP and preppers?
Preppers are human (sort of), humans have sleep apnea, people with sleep apnea need a XPAP machine, so including it into your plans would ne worthwhile, however it should be low on your list. I think other things will be needed more to get by. Jimpalerider wrote:was I the only one that glanced at the title of this thread and saw

Peppers store well, and help open your airways. When the marauders come to take your stuff you can give them out.
You can also make pepper spray for defense.

Around here it's "I'm a papper, you're a papper......" That fits better.
