Hans Rudolph FF mask no longer seals for me

Post by VikingGnome » Tue Sep 16, 2014 6:15 am

I've tried everything. Even with brand new replacement mask and/or cushion, the mask leaks all night. ResMed machine has red sad face every morning. Seems to leak the most at the chin when my head bends forward when sleeping supine on a pillow or curling chin to chest when sleeping on side. It also leaks when I open my mouth to breathe. It leaks at my eyes too but not as bad. I have tighten the straps so tight it hurts and then it doesn't leak. But it is extremely uncomfortable. My eyes feel like they are bulging out. Can't live with this any more. Don't know what changed but this mask does not work for me.

I reverted to using my old ResMed Activa LT Nasal Mask. Feels wonderful but I wake up with tongue glued to mouth with dryness. Mouth even dry with taping mouth shut. Chin strap doesn't help at all. It just pushes my chin back causing more airway obstruction. Haven't had a good night's sleep for weeks.

Think about trying the Airfir F10 For HER extra small FF. But the sizing guide indicates it will be too big for me by about an inch. I don't know what else to try. The Hans Rudolph was the only FF mask that comes in size PETITE (smaller than EXTRA SMALL). My pressure is 22/18 so can't use hybrid. Been considering Oral interface but at my pressure my mouth will be very dry.

Why can't manufacturers make a mask to fit people with short faces? I am SO FRUSTRATED. And with a mail order DME under Medicare Contract, I have no way to try on masks before being shipped to me. The Medicare Contract business is CRAP. There is no way a DME 800 miles away can adequately serve a person's needs when it comes to fitting masks.

Are nasal pillows not an option?

Have you tried the soft cervical collar to keep your mouth closed?

They don't make children's full face masks. Only nasal masks. Has something to do with potential choking on vomitus.

Mouth breathing would still be problem. Hybrid, maybe. But at my pressure (22/18), I don't think they would stay in my nose.

Called my mail order DME. They are sending me an Airfit F10 For Her Extra Small to try. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will work.

Please don't make that assumption unless you have tried them. Plenty here are at pressures like that and using nasal pillows.

Everything is an option until it's ruled out. I used to be a horrible mouth breather, replaced pillows every six months due to staining. Lo and behold, now that my airway is managed with CPAP, I no longer gasp for air and don't wake up in a puddle of drool. Chin straps are a great help as well, and don't have to be cumbersome.
