can't use machine all night

Post by msdlove » Mon Sep 15, 2014 11:46 am

CPAP not preheating/wake up coughing while using machine. I can not use it for more that 1 1/2 hours at a time. My nose feels runny and it wake me up.

Do you take Lisinopril? (for blood pressure or Diabetes) That's a known cause of dry cough in this therapy.

Don't know about your machine not preheating. I can't stand heated humidity and turned mine off right after I tried it, over nine years ago.
Do nasal cleansing before bedtime. That may minimize the runny nose issue.

Can you describe your cough?

Pugsy's answer here might help with the runny nose and says it better than what I was going to post.

Often nasal congestion and/or allergy like symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, etc) can come from either not enough added moisture to the air going up the nose or too much added moisture. There's no right or wrong. It's an individual thing that varies a lot between individuals. If your humidity setting in low...try higher....if it is already higher then try lower...if it's in the middle then toss a coin.
Google "cpap rhinitis" and you will see what I mean.

The cough is as if I have gotten choked up while using the machine

This is a common problem with this medication. If you do a forum search (above) on Lisinopril, you'll find many posts regarding this problem.

See if your doctor will prescribe you a different medication......like Diovan (Valsartan) or Cozaar (Losartan). There are probably others, but those are the two that I've taken since I experienced the violent cough when I started therapy in 2005.

Ditto to the comments on coughing on that particular med. Both my mother and I coughed on that med. If you are reluctant to change the med, could you switch the dose to morning and see if you cough during the day? I'd hate to see you jump through a bunch of hoops regarding your CPAP treatment without knowing for sure there is really a problem needing fixed.

I am so glad I found this article. My Dr just switched me to this med and now I am coughing at night and during the day. I take my med's in the am so it is still affecting me in the night. Thanks for the information.

My husband is on Linsonpril and coughs a lot, too. He sees his doc tomorrow--I'm going to have him mention it.
