How often should I get a sleep study done?

Post by Rogue » Tue Aug 26, 2014 10:26 pm

Just started to think.
How often should I get a sleep study done?

The first time I had a sleep study done was in 2011, 3 years ago.
The thing is when I had my sleep study done I had to shell out a little over $200.00, even if my HMO covered a greater amount.

If you have a fully data capable machine, like you do and you or your doctor check the data, I see no reason to get a new study unless you have problems.

Note that many doctors claim to check the data, but don't really look at the details.

I agree with "archangle". If you're not having problems, there's no need to put money in someone else's pockets. You could buy some more spare machines.

If you're comfortable using the machine and you haven't had any big changes in yourself; you probably are the same as when you started.

Big changes being weight gain or loss, change in prescribed medication, nose or throat surgeries, or if you follow your data; large decrease in flow limits, hypopneas...

This is what my sleep doctor said to me 5 years ago too. As long as my AHI stayed low and the symptoms stayed away, don't waste his time.

I recently had a new study done (the one that diagnosed cpap was 3 years ago, in 2011); the deciding factor was that it would not cost me a penny.

I had lost 60+ lbs since starting cpap and while I have an Auto machine and had already self-titrated to a lower pressure, I was curious if the sleep study would back up what I was doing on my own (it did). My prescribed pressure went from 14 cm to 10 cm.
