Am I missing something?
No, the z1 battery pack is expensive (actually $265) given that its only 45 Watt-hours (equivalent to about 3.5 amp-hours at 12v). However, the Goal Zero is also quite pricey at $350 for only 8.8 Amp-hours. There are alternatives, such as the owell 266 (20 Amp-hours) for about $300. Also, it would be a hard gather enough solar power to recharge for a night on a cpap, although admittedly the z1 is quite frugal.

The z1's odd voltage requires either the expensive battery, or an inverter, which largely offsets the efficiency. Given the other issues reported, plus lack of auto and humidity, it seems that this is not quite ready for prime time.

Hi Folks,

I ordered the Z1 and it arrives tomorrow.

I travel via air about 40 weeks a year, mostly Monday to Friday and I actually stopped using my cpap, a Remstar Pro M w/humidifier because of the pain it the butt it was to carry a third carryon and the extra hassle of getting through TSA. I know, it doesn't seem like much of an inconvenience but I've been doing this for 10 years and it got real old a few years ago. Plus, I lost a bunch of weight so didn't really experience any perceivable symptoms when not using the cpap.

Well, I've gained the weight back and the apnea was really affecting me so I went back on my REMstar and feel great....but it's still such a pain in the butt having the extra bag.

So I was excited to see the Z1, my local DME could not get one so I ordered it directly from HDM. Yes, the battery seems expensive but there are no alternatives, at any cost, which keep the Z1 small.

I'm actually home this week for the first time this year so I ordered the device, the unplugged version, and I'm excited to get it. I don't use the Ramp feature on my REMstar but do use Cflex so I'm anxious to see how Z-Breath works.

I'll use it at home for the rest of the week before I head out again on Monday. I'll try the battery as well and report back here with my impressions from using the unit.

My sleep number is 11

When the device it arrived I didn't see any rubber feet on it or in the package. You'll want to buy some to keep the device from moving off the table, though I didn't have the experience of it falling or anything. The power port's position on the device has the cable coming out the same side as the tube, which seemed a little ergonomically strange to me.
I received mine yesterday and the Z1 now has clear rubber feet on the Z1 and black non-skid strips on the battery PowerShell.

Mine was delivered without the hose adapter so I couldn't try it out last night. A call to HDM and they overnighted the adapter. Should be here in a couple of hours. So I haven't checked out the noise when connected to a mask but the unit itself is almost silent.

First night with the Z1 went fine. My wife thinks it is as least as quiet as my REMStar 60 M though she says that it sounds different....different rhythm.

I found that it does indeed sound different while using my nasal mask though no louder, just different.

I had Z-Breath set to CPAP-2 and that was a bit weird at first as compared to C-Flex. When I first started breathing, upon exhale, I felt resistance and could feel my mask cushion expanding as my exhale filled it up. After a minute or two this stopped and it felt just like C-Flex. Early in the morning I switched back to my REMStar to get a little humidification in my now dry nose. An hour later I went back to the Z1 and experienced the same Z-Breath behavior. I had thought it was just "learning" my patterns and I was surprised to experience the same start up behavior.

All in all I'm very happy with the unit and will be taking it on my business trip tomorrow. I travel about 40 weeks a year so it will see a lot of use.

Tonight I'm going to try it on battery and using the HME. I'll update you tomorrow.

2nd night. I used the Z1 on battery and with the HME. The HME worked well enough so that I wasn't dried out but certainly not as well as my REMStar set on high...and wouldn't expect it to work like that. I felt that the air I was inhaling was a bit warmer than the previous night but that may have been my imagination. I will use the HME for the rest of the week on my biz trip.

The Z1 was on battery for 8.5 hours and I have 2 bars left (out of 5 I think). It did sound different on battery than it did the first night, I will check that tonight when I'm back on power...or it could have been the HME changing the noise...seamed even more quiet.

Also, not knowing if it was the HME or the Battery but The pressure did not seem as strong last night. I'll check it tonight while on power and see if that was the reason or if it was the HME.

All and all I was well rested this morning though I woke up a number of times last night.

More to come....

I took the Z1 without the battery pack on a business trip last week.

1. It's great for travel and getting through TSA...I didn't even take it out of my backpack.
2. It is louder than my REMstar but does not bother either me or my wife. But while on battery is is more quiet. It seems to be louder when you first start it up as a number times I woke up and didn't hear it running.
3. I am still getting used to Z-Breath but I'm sleeping fine. C-Flex seems to make exhale feel like I'm not wearing a mask, not so with Z-Breath, feel more pressure on exhale however if I wake up or when I wake up in the morning, either the Z1 or myself has adjusted because it feels fine.
4. The HME works great. I got 4 nights out of it in Charleston SC, one night in New Hampshire. The 6th night and my nose was dry.
7. It definitely does not put out as much air (cfm) as my REMstar and because of that I'm not sure how well it is working. I mean I'm sleeping and feeling fine but if I assume that my REMstar is working properly then I think there's a lot more pressure in my airway with that then the Z1.
8. When I returned from my trip the battery, which when I left was half full, was dead. It recharged fine but I don't think that should act that way.

Just bought the Z1 CPAP 2 weeks ago. I am using my Resmed S9 Autoset as my main device but got tried of lugging it around.

I am still trying to get used to it. I am not going to compare between the S9 and the Z1. The S9 is clearly a superior product except for the size. It is still not as comfortable as S9.

On Zbreathe, between CPAP-1 and CPAP-2, CPAP-2 works better for me. The response for CPAP-1 is too gentle for my preference.
On Ramping, I started with 5.0cm instead of 4.0cm. I have difficulty breathing at 4.0cm, there doesn't seem to have any pressure.
As for the ramp duration, I set the time to 35min. My pressure setting is 12.0cm.
On Noise, I tried using the 4' and 6' cable, the Swift FX Pillow mask and Swift FX Nano nasal mask.
Among the various combination, the 4' and Swift FX Nano nasal mask combination gave me the greatest comfort.

I just purchased a Z1, have been using a Phillips for a couple of years with a Large ResMed QuatroPro 4 mask. I am really impressed with the size of the new Z1 for sure. The main problem I am having is my Mask. The literature of the Z1 states that the Z1 will work with "any" mask but I have difficulty with the air exchange on my Mirage 4. I can inhale excellently, but I can't exhale with that mask. There are two vent holes but the Mirage 4 has a small oval shaped Diaphragm that "closes" during exhaling! I tried to keep it open with a paperclip and it worked but the exhalation is extremely LOUD. My setting is 14 and even if it were less than that the Diaphragm would still close . I do have an old ResMed "Nose" type mask that I can use, but then I would have to use the chin strap along with it again to keep my big mouth closed. Is anyone else having the same problem using a Large ResMed QuatroPro 4 mask like mine?
Thanks for any info you can share,
bkVT

I just found a universal HME:

I'm just curious enough to try one with my Intellipap.

Z1 users, is it difficult to adjust to the fixed pressure of the Z1 after using the variable pressure of the S9? Also, did you need a new script indicating a fixed pressure to purchase the Z1?

I recently purchased the Z1. The battery life is much less than advertised: it claims 8 hrs at 15 cm. I'm lucky to get 6 hrs at that setting ( big difference between 6 and 8 hrs of sleep!).
It's also pretty noisy.

My complaints to cpapsupplyusa.com, from whom I purchased the unit, resulted in snotty replies and no help.

It will take getting used to.

I also find that using pillow mask like the Swift FX pillow is harder. I used the Swift FX Nano instead.

As for the noise, I find adding an In-line Outlet Bacteria Filter helps to tone down the noise.

Just an update to the Z1. There has been a new firmware release with a CPAP-3 setting.
After trying for 1 night, I think it has improved the Z1 considerably. It almost felt like the S9. Not really there yet, but close enough.

Second night trying the HDM Z1, do not love the sound. On the first night I gave up after an hour and changed to my Resmed machine and fell right to sleep.
Tonight I am up after trying for an hour, still no luck sleeping. I did lower my pressure to test if that lowers the high pitched sound. Now I am going to try changing the
setting for the breathing control.

Feeling a bit sick about this such high hopes, love the size and I was taking on a business trip next week.....

It almost looks too small and light. I can imagine a quick rollover on the hose and launching it to visit my husband. I didn't see a view of it with a hose. I will have too look online to see if it gets air through a 6 ft. hose. But too pricy for me in any case.
