Another stupid BiPap question

Post by Java » Thu Aug 28, 2014 4:03 pm

Sorry I am new to BiPap after 2 years of Apap.

When Kaiser sleep center sent me home with a loaner for 2 weeks it was set at EPAP 10 and IPAP 25. All threw the night it would auto sense what pressure I needed and change. The graphs go up and down with a Med EPAP of 12.9 and a Med IPAP of 15.8. It was perfect. Felt great.

Now I get my new machine and Apria gives me a run around for 3 weeks then just hands me a BiPap with no settings (wrong mask too!) Ugh. They gave it to me with the EPAP at 4 and the IPAP at 20. It nearly blew my teeth out of my mouth. So I set the EPAP at 13 and the IPAP at 17. But here is my problem now. I have 2 flat lines of pressure. EPAP and IPAP. It's not auto changing the pressure for what I need. How the heck do I get this thing on auto?!

You probably can't.
Those settings are "straight Bi-PAP". If you do not have an Auto Bi-PAP, it can't be set to auto adjust. From what I see, the Model 660 is the "Pro" (straight pressures) model and not an Auto model. Kind of the same difference in straight pressure CPAP as opposed to Auto CPAP.

Are you serious? $1800 machine and it doesn't have an auto mode? I'm done with this. Screw it. I cannot sleep with this thing
Thanks

I believe you DID mention Kaiser in your first post. That would probably explain the non-Auto machine.

Actually, some people are disturbed by the changing pressures and do better with straight pressures.......both CPAP and BiPAP.

I would suggest giving it a reasonable trial before doing something drastic. There may be other settings that might work if these don't quite get the job done.

Personally, I prefer straight pressure CPAP, but have never tried Bi-PAP.

Or........you could call the provider and try to find out why they gave you a straight Bi-PAP instead of an Auto Bi-PAP

Why?? Because it's Kaiser. I've been fighting them for 2 years. The first CPAP they gave me 2 years ago wasn't data capable. I had to fight like heck to get a data machine. Then I had to fight for the Auto machine. Now here I am getting ready for battle again.

What were the pressure settings that the doctor prescribed? If he prescribed a range of pressures then they gave you the wrong machine because it can't do the range of pressures.
I doubt that the RX was for 4 EPAP and 20 IPAP though...those settings go more in line with the default settings that came from the factory. No way would 4 EPAP work for someone who had been needing EPAP in the teens with the auto machine.

I am not 100% sure what the doctor prescribed because I never got to see the prescription. Kaiser just calls it into Apria. Kaiser had sent me home with a AUTO BiPap for 2 weeks set at 10 APAP and 25 IPAP. She said since I did so good with the two week loaner she would order me the same machine.
Well either she didn't order the same machine as the one I tried, or Apria really screwed up bad. The machine was ordered on the 6th and they would not let me pick it up till the 26th. When I went to Apria to pick it up the lady seemed bothered and said, "Oh I have to go put in the settings so it will be a few minutes." As if 20 days wasn't enough time? Then she brought out the wrong mask. And being that the machine she gave me was set at 4 EPAP and 20 IPAP I have no clue what "settings" she did to the machine. I know my doctor didn't prescribe that for sure. Now my doctor is out of the office 'till the first, so I will just have to wait more and see what happens. I've hooked up my old machine for now because one thing I know for sure is I don't want this straight BiPap. They can have it back or I will use it as a door stop. It's like test driving a Rolls Royce for 2 weeks and going home with a late model Ford.

the 660 is not an auto bipap, it's a set pressure bipap.

the 760 is the auto bipap in the respironics line.

Just got a call back from the Kaiser Sleep Clinic. They want me to bring in this machine and they will give me back the loaner till Apria gets me the right equipment.

Thanks All,

Sally
