Anyone get improvement of insomnia with CPAP?

Post by anonfan1432 » Tue Aug 26, 2014 3:08 pm

Has anyone here had severe insomnia (staying asleep, not necessarily falling asleep) that improved with CPAP?

I have severe middle of the night insomnia. I can fall asleep just fine, but I will wake up 2-3 hours later and it's literally impossible to go back to sleep.
thanks

My personal experience has been that my CPAP equipment has had no effect- good or bad- relative to insomnia. I do occasionally experience insomnia problems and have used prescription Ambien occasionally. Lately I have been taking a low dosage (1 mg) melatonin with good results.

Some people do and some people don't. It all depends on what is/was causing the sleep maintenance insomnia. If the insomnia is solely caused by the apnea events then with optimal therapy it should improve. Unfortunately insomnia can have many causes and isn't limited to sleep apnea and the machine can't fix a problem if the problem isn't related to sleep apnea.

I still have insomnia (which I'm gathering is very common in menopausal women), but it's MUCH improved in two areas:
1. I fall asleep almost immediately now after a LIFETIME of very long sleep latency--2 or more hours before CPAP.
2. I still wake up at least once during the night, but I go RIGHT BACK TO SLEEP. Before I would be up for a few hours when I had my 4 a.m. wake up, often finally falling asleep again right before my alarm went off.

So I would say in my case CPAP has helped a lot. I can live with this level of insomnia--it's barely noticeable at this point.

All of my life I've had a very long sleep latency, like Janknitz, 3 or 4 hours of tossing and turning and wondering when I was ever going to get to sleep... once I'd adjusted to CPAP, that changed. Now, although I rarely fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, I am almost always asleep within an hour. Sometimes I do get to sleep fairly quickly, in less than 30 minutes. I usually sleep through the night except for 1 or 2 trips to the loo, but always get right back to sleep afterward.
